Book Description
Excerpt from An African Adventure Rom earliest boyhood when I read the works of Henry M. Stanley and books about Cecil Rhodes, Africa has called to me. It was not until I met General Smuts during the Great War, however, that I had a definite reason for going there. After these late years of blood and battle America and Europe seemed tame. Besides, the economic war after the war developed into a struggle as bitter as the actual physical conflict. Discord and discon tent became the portion of the civilized world. I wan ted to get as far as possible from all this social unrest and financial dislocation. So much interest was evinced in the magazine articles which first set forth the record of my jour ney that I was prompted to expand them into this book. It may enable the reader to discover a section of the one-time Dark Continent without the hard ships which I experienced. Book Description
Excerpt from Adventures The word "Pentwall" is not in the dictionary. Actually it has no meaning. But I thought it might tickle your curiosity. If I headed this page as "Preface" probably you would not read it. Few people read Prefaces. But I want to save you from having to wade through this book in order to find out what it is about. So I tell you, here and now, that it records incidents and impressions of my recent trip round Africa, and that one of its objects is to encourage people - especially Scouts and other young creatures - to travel. You see, life is short; yet much of it is wasted by people becoming vegetables, and not very satisfied or satisfactory vegetables at that. Whereas a little roaming about this wonderful globe while they are on it can give them that wider outlook and those greater sympathies which develop the soul in the individual and goodwill and peace in the world. Knowing this of the book, you can now take it or leave it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Man-Eaters of Tsavo: And Other East African Adventures From the time of Herodotus until to-day, lion stories innumerable have been told and written. I have put some on record myself. But no lion story I have ever heard or read equals in its long sustained and dramatic interest the story of the Tsavo man-eaters as told by Col. Patterson. A lion story is usually a tale of adventures, often very terrible and pathetic, which occupied but a few hours of one night; but the tale of the Tsavo man eaters is an epic of terrible tragedies spread out over several months, and only at last brought to an end by the resource and determination of one man. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Exploration and Adventure in Africa Never has the future of Africa been brighter than at the present time. There is no hope for a return of those glories which ages upon ages past adorned Egypt; the might of Carthage has long since gone for ever the whole of North Africa has been divided, and the signs of improvement are very limited. In other parts of the continent, however, new life is springing, channels for the introduction of civilization are constantly ap pearing. Book Description
THIS small volume contains some of the letters I have received during the last thirty years or more from well-known big-game hunters and field-naturalists, many of whom have now passed away. They were so interesting to me that I thought they might interest others who have shot in wilder Africa. Moreover, they describe conditions which are no longer possible considering the way many parts of that continent have been opened up since the Great War. Whether the spread of a so-called civilization is a good thing I do not wish to discuss, but I know there are many men, including myself, who would prefer the older times when things were less complicated and conventional. Many people are now going in for photography more than shooting, and in a way this is a good thing as it will naturally help to conserve the game. It is, however, a much less risky amusement to take animals’ pictures—I mean dangerous animals—than to try to kill them, for game such as lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros are seldom dangerous until they are wounded and followed up in thick cover. Some people may doubt this statement, but it is nevertheless true, as all experienced hunters can vouch.

Book Description
An African Adventure This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
