The recent interest in the development of small UAVs and micro air vehicles has revealed a need for a more thorough understanding of the aerodynamics of small airplanes flying at low speeds. In response to this need, the present work provides a comprehensive study of the lift, drag, and pitching moment characteristics of wings of low aspect ratio operating at low Reynolds numbers. Wind tunnel tests of wings with aspect ratios between 0.5 and 2.0 and with four distinct wing planforms have been conducted at chord-Reynolds numbers in the range of 70,000 to 200,000. In addition, the effect of leading edge shape and fuselage bodies has been studied. As an example of an application of this wind tunnel data, the experimental results are used as part of an aerodynamic analysis procedure. This procedure is incorporated into a genetic algorithm optimization program that generates optimum MAV configurations given certain requirements and constraints. Results obtained by use of this optimization procedure have revealed that useful and accurate design-optimization tools can be developed based on the experimental data presented within this report.

This intriguing book breaks new ground on an emerging subject that has attracted considerable attention: the use of unmanned micro air vehicles (MAVs) to conduct special, limited duration missions. Significant advances in the miniaturization of electronics make it now possible to use vehicles of this type in a detection or surveillance role to carry visual, acoustic, chemical, or biological sensors. Interestingly, many of the advances in MAV technology can be traced directly to annual student competitions, begun in the late 1990s, that use relatively low cost model airplane equipment. The program at Arizona State University (ASU) consisted of complementary experimental, computational, and flight-test elements that examined the aerodynamics of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). All these components supported the actual design of our MAV, called MAVRIC (Micro Aerial Vehicle Research Initiative and Competition) and which competed for two years against other university teams. MAVs are characterized by low operating chord Reynolds numbers and thus present challenges in viscous aerodynamics. Our studies focused on the effects on performance of different wing-body-juncture and wing-tip designs. MAV aerodynamics is strongly affected by the wing-tip vortices which extend over a significant amount of span. Blending the wing and fuselage and adding winglets provided a reduction in the extent of these vortices as well as a refocusing of them away from the lifting surface.

A description of the micro-air vehicle (MAV) concept and design requirements is presented. These vehicles are very small and therefore operate at chord Reynolds numbers below 200,000 where very little data is available on the performance of lifting surfaces, i.e., airfoils and low aspect-ratio wings. This paper presents the results of a continuing study of the methods that can be used to obtain reliable force and moment data on thin wings in wind and water tunnels. To this end, a new platform force and moment balance, similar to an already existing balance, was designed and built to perform lift, drag and moment measurements at low Reynolds numbers. Balance characteristics and validation data are presented. Results show a good agreement between published data and data obtained with the new balance. Results for lilt, drag and pitching moment about the quarter chord with the existing aerodynamic balance on a series of thin flat plates and cambered plates at low Reynolds numbers are presented. They show that the cambered plates offer better aerodynamic characteristics and performance. Moreover, it appears that the trailing-edge geometry of the wings and the turbulence intensity up to about 1% in the wind tunnel do not have a strong effect on the lilt and drag for thin wings at low Reynolds numbers. However, the presence of two endplates for two-dimensional tests and one endplate for the semi-infinite tests appears to have an undesirable influence on the lift characteristics at low Reynolds numbers.
