The European Workshop on White Dwarfs was initiated by Prof. V. Weidemann, with the first meeting held in Kiel (FRG) in 1974. Since then a similar workshop has been held almost every two years: Frascati (1976), Tel Aviv (1978), Paris (1981), Kiel (1984), Frascati (1986) and Toulouse (1990). Two major IAU colloquia have also been devoted to the study of white dwarfs (No. 53, Rochester NY, 1979; No. 114, Hanover, NH, 1988). Our most recent meeting, the 8th Workshop, marks a number of important advances in both observational and theoretical studies of white dwarfs. This coincides with a significant expansion in the size of the community active in the field, as was clear from an increase in the number of participants between this workshop (77) and that in Toulouse (46), just two years ago. Key parts of any workshop are the discussion sessions following the pa pers. However, these are difficult to record and, very often, the 'live' flavour of the debates is lost. During this workshop we carried out an experiment, recording the discussion sessions on video tape and then transcribing these later for the proceedings. Although the recordings were made in non-studio conditions with regard to lighting and noise, only a very small part was unin telligible. All participants were given an opportunity to check their questions and answers for scientific accuracy and to correct any errors arising in the transcription process.

Helio- and asteroseismology study the interior of the Sun and other stars, by means of observations of oscillations on their surfaces. The last 10 years in the study of the solar interior, to a has witnessed a very rapid evolution point where we can now contemplate investigating the physical state of matter, or the details of rotation and other large-scale motion, in the Sun. The stellar studies are in some respects at the point of the solar studies 10 years ago, but appear poised to take off. Thus the time was deemed ripe for lAO Symposium No 123, to assess the present status of this work, and plan for its future development. Apart from the seismic data, few observations are available to provide information about stellar interiors. Detailed studies, by spectral analysis, can be made of stellar surface properties, including atmospheric temperature and chemical composition. However, the stellar radiative spectrum is almost entirely fixed by the mass, luminosity, radius and surface rotation of the star, and contains essentially no other information about the interior. An important test of stellar evolution theory is provided by observations of stel lar clusters, whose members can reasonably be assumed to have the same age and chemical composition. The location of such stars in a HR diagram, where luminosity is plotted against the effective temperature, can roughly be understood in terms of stellar evolution calculations.

This book reports the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "An gular Momentum Evolution of Young Stars" held from 17 to 21 September 1990 at Noto, Italy. The workshop had its immediate origin in a discussion about the availability of stel lar rotation data, that took place in 1987 at Viana do Castelo Portugal during the NATO meeting, Formation and Evolution of Low Mass Stars. We recognized that nearly 20 years had passed since the last meeting on stellar rotation and that significant progress in the observation of rotation rates in low mass stars had been made. During the last 20 years, new efficient instrumentation (CCD and photon counting de tectors and echelle spectrographs) and new analysis techniques (profile Fourier analysis) have allowed us to measure rotational velocities as low as 1-2 km/s and to reach low mass stars in young clusters. Even with these advances, rotational velocities of low mass stars would have remained challenging to determine if all single, low mass stars later than GO had rotational velocities of order or less than 10 km/sec. Evidence that this is not always the case was first provided by the photometric variability data obtained by van Leeuwen and Alphenaar for K dwarfs in the Pleiades and more recently by the vsini measurements of low mass stars in several young clusters.
