Book Description
From exception handling to the Internet, the first guide to advanced Smalltalk programming techniques This powerful book/CD package is for experienced Smalltalk programmers who are ready to go on to the next level. Beginning where all the other Smalltalk programming guides leave off, this package arms you with advanced programming techniques and a wealth of insider tips on how to more quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively develop applications in Smalltalk. While the focus throughout is on the five most popular versions of Smalltalk (VisualWorks, VisualSmalltalk, VisualAge/IBM Smalltalk, SmalltalkAgents, and Enfin), users of other, less widely used Smalltalk environments can benefit from the information in this book. Advanced Smalltalk tells you what you need to know about: * Avoiding most common Smalltalk bugs * Using patterns and frameworks * Supercharging your Smalltalk programs to make them run faster * Integrating non-Smalltalk legacy code with your Smalltalk application * Storing and retrieving information from relational and object databases * Smalltalk on the Internet and its role in electronic commerce * The Smalltalk ANSI Standard * Implementing neural nets in Smalltalk * Style for design and coding in Smalltalk * Interview guidelines for Smalltalk programmers JONATHAN PLETZKE is a consultant specializing in Smalltalk development and programming. On the CD-ROM you'll find: * An object-oriented HTTP server * An object-oriented HTTP client * A documentation generator * Development and team source code management tools * Primitive and external interface templates * A back-propagation neural net program * Two public domain Smalltalk development environments: GNU Smalltalk for Unix, DOS, Windows, and Windows/NT Little Smalltalk for Macintosh, DOS, Windows, and Unix * Two Educational/Demonstration Smalltalk development environments: * Smalltalk/X for Unix (Solaris and Linux) * SmalltalkNT for Windows/NT version 4.0 * Smalltalk archives: University of Illinois Archive (st.cs.uiuc.edu) Smalltalk Store Archive (www.smalltalk.com)

Book Description
The Workshop on Self-sustaining Systems (S3) is a forum for the discussion of topics relating to computer systems and languages that are able to bootstrap, implement, modify, and maintain themselves. One property of these systems is that their implementation is based onsmall but powerfulabstractions;examples include (amongst others) Squeak/Smalltalk, COLA, Klein/Self, PyPy/Python, Rubinius/Ruby,andLisp.Suchsystemsaretheenginesoftheirownreplacement, giving researchers and developers great power to experiment with, and explore future directions from within, their own small language kernels. S3 took place on May 15–16, 2008 at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute (HPI) in Potsdam, Germany. It was an exciting opportunity for researchers and prac- tioners interested in self-sustaining systems to meet and share their knowledge, experience, and ideas for future research and development. S3 provided an - portunity for a community to gather and discuss the need for self-sustainability in software systems, and to share and explore thoughts on why such systems are needed and how they can be created and deployed. Analogies were made, for example, with evolutionary cycles, and with urban design and the subsequent inevitable socially-driven change. TheS3participantsleftwithagreatersenseofcommunityandanenthusiasm for probing more deeply into this subject. We see the need for self-sustaining systems becoming critical not only to the developer’s community, but to e- users in business, academia, learning and play, and so we hope that this S3 workshop will become the ?rst of many.

Book Description
Almost every day, one of Amy Julia’s children says something or asks something that prompts her to think more carefully: “Why Mommy crying?” (Marilee, when the family learned a young boy had died of cancer); “Booful, Mommy” (“Beautiful, Mommy,” as Penny proclaimed just as Amy Julia was looking in the mirror and critiquing her post-pregnancy body in her head); “What lasting mean?” (William, when he heard a song in church about God being an everlasting God). These conversations deepen her relationships with her children, but they also deepen and refine her own understanding of what she believes, why she believes it, and what she hopes to pass along to the next generation. Small Talk is a narrative based upon these conversations. It is not a parenting guide. It does not offer prescriptive lessons about how to talk with children. Rather, it tells stories based upon the questions and statements Amy Julia’s children have made about the things that make life good (such as love, kindness, beauty, laughter, and friendship), the things that make life hard (such as death, failure, and tragedy), and what we believe (such as prayer, God, and miracles). Amy Julia explores three parts—body, mind, spirit—as she moves in rough chronological order through the basic questions her kids asked when they were very young to the intellectual and then spiritual questions of later childhood. It invites other parents into these same conversations, with their children, with God, and with themselves. Moving from humorous exchanges to profound questions to heart-wrenching moments, Amy Julia encourages parents to ask themselves—and to talk with their children about—what matters most.
