After conducting a comprehensive literature search, the authors undertook a meta-analysis to examine the association between correctional education and reductions in recidivism, improvements in employment after release from prison, and other outcomes. The study finds that receiving correctional education while incarcerated reduces inmates' risk of recidivating and may improve their odds of obtaining employment after release from prison.

Book Description
The primary purpose of this book is to offer supplemental material to assist in understanding basic content information on a variety of correctional topics including institutional and community corrections, adult and juvenile offender risks and needs, and administrative and management principles. Case studies, example reports, practitioner interviews, and an informational guide for career development are amongst the tools used with a focus on the stated purpose. Learning tools are included at the end of each case study in the form of questions, discussion topics, and assignments. "This type of learning provides students with 'mental hooks' on which they can hang the concepts that are described in their books. Barbara Peat has done an excellent job of providing such case studies for the benefit of students and professors who teach courses in the field of corrections. They should prove useful in a wide range of corrections courses." -- G. Larry Mays, New Mexico State University "Case Studies in Corrections: Examples, Exercises, Discussion Points, and Practitioner Interviews is the ideal companion for a variety of corrections textbooks. Dr. Peat's extensive practitioner and academic background is evident throughout the pages of this highly credible and well-organized source of authoritative information. Corrections professionals will also find this book to be a useful addition to their library." -- David F. Owens, Onondaga Community College "This is exactly the type of book that helps instructors bridge the gap between the academic and practical worlds. The case study examples can be used in a variety of projects, assignments, or for class discussion. The content and format of the book lends itself nicely to complementing a primary text for a corrections class." -- Kathrine Johnson, Ph.D., University of West Florida "In criminal justice and corrections, few aspects for a student are more important than understanding the marriage of theory and practice. The ability to apply concepts and theories of corrections to cases is a valuable learning tool for students and pedagogical instrument for instructors. Case Studies in Corrections: Examples, Exercises, Discussion Points, and Practitioner Interviews allows just this -- the interplay of theory and practice. Authored by an individual with academic training, practical experience, and knowledge of learning and assessment, this book should prove to be valuable in the classroom and for future correctional professionals." -- Bryan D. Byers, Ball State University
