This book provides an authoritative history of the Brazilian army from the armys overthrow of the monarchy in 1889 to its support of the coup that established Brazils first civilian dictatorship in 1937. The period between these two events laid the political foundations of modern Brazila period in which the army served as the core institution of an expanding and modernizing Brazilian state. The book is based on detailed research in Brazilian, British, American, and French archives, and on numerous interviews with surviving military and civilian leaders. It also makes extensive use of hitherto unused internal army documents, as well as of private correspondence and diaries. It is thus able to shed new light on the armys personnel and ethos, on its ties with civilian elites, on the consequences of military professionalization, and on how the army reinvented itself after the collapse of its command structure in the crisis of 1930a reinvention that allowed the army to become the backbone of the post-1937 dictatorship of Getulio Vargas.

The correspondence between Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1932) and Sir Patrick Manson (1844-1922) is rich in both scientific and human terms. It records, in great detail, Ross's research in India between 1895 and 1899, which elucidated the role of mosquitoes in the transmission of malaria, work for which Ross was awarded the 1902 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology. Ross described the mosquito-transmission theory as Manson's 'Grand Induction', and he had returned to India, where he was an officer in the Indian Medical Service, having been primed by Manson. Ross's regular letters to his mentor document the frustrations and false trails as well as the excitement of discovery. Manson in turn acted as a kind of agent in London, publicising his findings, offering advice and seeking to use his influence to secure for Ross the working conditions he so desired. These 173 letters, plus 85 from the two decades after Ross's return to Britain also record the rise and full of a relationship, as Ross's preoccupation with his place in the history of malariology led to a breach between the two men. Themes of priority, nationalism, and personal vanity punctuate this latter correspondence, which also reveals new insights about the golden years of tropical medicine. Ross included some of the correspondence in his Memoirs, but most of it appears here, fully annotated, for the first time.

Aelian's Historical Miscellany is a pleasurable example of light reading for Romans of the early third century. Offering engaging anecdotes about historical figures, retellings of legendary events, and descriptive pieces - in sum: amusement, information, and variety - Aelian's collection of nuggets and narratives could be enjoyed by a wide reading public. A rather similar book had been published in Latin in the previous century by Aulus Gellius; Aelian is a late, perhaps the last, representative of what had been a very popular genre. Here then are anecdotes about the famous Greek philosophers, poets, historians, and playwrights; myths instructively retold; moralizing tales about heroes and rulers, athletes and wise men; reports about styles in dress, foods and drink, lovers, gift-giving practices, entertainments, religious beliefs and death customs; and comments on Greek painting. Some of the information is not preserved in any other source. Underlying it all are Aelian's Stoic ideals as well as this Roman's great admiration for the culture of the Greeks (whose language he borrowed for his writings).

First published in 1998. Despite the upsurge of interest in the history of tropical medicine, international public health and the provision of health care in colonial and post-colonial tropical countries, no major text discusses the history of the academic discipline in the twentieth century. In Britain, the two Schools of Tropical Medicine opened within six months of each other in the final year of the nineteenth century. They have played a pivotal role in developing tropical medicine, as an academic discipline in postgraduate medicine with an active research profile. The Schools also affected the development of health care in the tropical colonies. They trained the Medical Officers of the Colonial Medical Service and the indigenous doctors whose training failed to include infectious endemic diseases and lacked an emphasis on community health. The Schools also contributed to a body of knowledge applied by the colonial powers, international agencies and independent nation states as part of their health care programmes. Ultimately the Schools helped the developing world to establish its own priorities for health. This volume charts the history of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine from1898 to1990.
