This Special Issue presents some of the main emerging research on technological topics of health and education approaches to Internet use-related problems, before and during the beginning of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The objective is to provide an overview to facilitate a comprehensive and practical approach to these new trends to promote research, interventions, education, and prevention. It contains 40 papers, four reviews and thirty-five empirical papers and an editorial introducing everything in a rapid review format. Overall, the empirical ones are of a relational type, associating specific behavioral addictive problems with individual factors, and a few with contextual factors, generally in adult populations. Many have adapted scales to measure these problems, and a few cover experiments and mixed methods studies. The reviews tend to be about the concepts and measures of these problems, intervention options, and prevention. In summary, it seems that these are a global culture trend impacting health and educational domains. Internet use-related addiction problems have emerged in almost all societies, and strategies to cope with them are under development to offer solutions to these contemporary challenges, especially during the pandemic situation that has highlighted the global health problems that we have, and how to holistically tackle them.

Las nuevas tecnologías de la información (TIC) han revolucionado el estilo de vida de los adultos, pero sin duda el cambio más espectacular se ha producido en los menores, que ya han nacido con estas nuevas tecnologías. Su forma de vivir la infancia y la adolescencia se ha modificado, al menos en relación con la que hemos vivido los que ahora somos adultos. Observar en los menores una dedicación de tiempo y comportamientos muy diferentes a los que hemos tenido nosotros sin duda nos sorprende. No se entiende que se pasen horas ante una pantalla de televisión, un ordenador o un teléfono móvil. Cuesta comprender que, en lugar de estar jugando con los amigos en la calle, se encierren en casa a hablar con ellos a través del Messenger o del móvil o se conecten a las redes sociales virtuales (Tuenti o Facebook). Las nuevas tecnologías están abriendo brechas digitales en nuestra sociedad, en especial entre adultos y adolescentes. La tecnología desarrollada para facilitarnos la vida también puede complicárnosla. Los comportamientos como la obsesión por adquirir la última novedad tecnológica, el sustituir los contactos personales por la comunicación virtual o la necesidad de estar conectado a Internet de forma permanente, han creado gran alarma social, en parte agravada por la falta de criterios de referencia sobre lo que es normal y lo que no. Muchas de estas conductas han comenzado a etiquetarse como adictivas, dadas sus características de generar dependencia y restar libertad al restringir la amplitud de intereses, además de interferir gravemente en la vida cotidiana, a nivel familiar, escolar, social o de salud. ¿Qué hay de cierto en todo ello? ¿Qué se puede hacer?
