Biological Micro- and Nanotribology
Author: Matthias Scherge
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662044315
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
By employing a combination of approaches from several disciplines the authors elucidate the principles of a variety of biomechanical systems that rely on frictional surfaces or adhesive secretions to attach parts of the body to one another or to attach organisms to a substrate. This account provides an excellent starting point for engineers and physicists working with biological systems and for biologists studying friction and adhesion. It will also serve as a valuable introduction for graduate students entering this interdisciplinary field of research.

Mechanisms Assisting Or Impeding Adhesion in Biological Systems
Author: R. E. Baier
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Adhesion
Languages : en
Pages : 38
Book Description
Intimate molecular contact at joint interfaces is essential for the extremely localized surface forces to result in adhesion exceeding the cohesive strength of the joined materials. Liquids, however viscous, are perhaps a more important class of adhesives in biology than in any other field. Attention is focused on the spreading of well-defined liquids over rigid or coherent phases of potential biological interest. The contact angle (T) of liquids on solids provides an inverse measure of liquid spreading. Rectilinear plots of cos T vs liquid surface tension (L) define the critical surface tension of wetting (Lc) for each solid. Direct, simple correlations exist between Lc and solid surface composition. Wetting and adhesion can be completely changed by adsorbed films, even monolayers; adsorbed water, for example, can markedly decrease Lc. Wettability properties and Lc concept are pertinent to current adhesional and biomedical problems. Coupling agents have a potential role in bioadhesion. (Author).

Wet Granular Matter: A Truly Complex Fluid
Author: Stephan Herminghaus
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814417718
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
This is a monograph written for the young and advanced researcher who is entering the field of wet granular matter and keen to understand the basic physical principles governing this state of soft matter. It treats wet granulates as an instance of a ternary system, consisting of the grains, a primary, and a secondary fluid. After addressing wetting phenomena in general and outlining the basic facts on dry granular systems, a chapter on basic mechanisms and their effects is dedicated to every region of the ternary phase diagram. Effects of grain shape and roughness are considered as well. Rather than addressing engineering aspects such as existing books on this topic do, the book aims to provide a generalized framework suitable for those who want to understand these systems on a more fundamental basis.

Intermolecular and Surface Forces
Author: Jacob N. Israelachvili
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0123919339
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 708
Book Description
Intermolecular and Surface Forces describes the role of various intermolecular and interparticle forces in determining the properties of simple systems such as gases, liquids and solids, with a special focus on more complex colloidal, polymeric and biological systems. The book provides a thorough foundation in theories and concepts of intermolecular forces, allowing researchers and students to recognize which forces are important in any particular system, as well as how to control these forces. This third edition is expanded into three sections and contains five new chapters over the previous edition. - Starts from the basics and builds up to more complex systems - Covers all aspects of intermolecular and interparticle forces both at the fundamental and applied levels - Multidisciplinary approach: bringing together and unifying phenomena from different fields - This new edition has an expanded Part III and new chapters on non-equilibrium (dynamic) interactions, and tribology (friction forces)

Sliding Friction
Author: Bo N.J. Persson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662036460
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 465
Book Description
Sliding friction is one of the oldest problems in physics and certainly one of the most important from a practical point of view. The ability to produce durable low-friction surfaces and lubricant fluids has become an important factor in the miniaturization of moving components in many technological devices, e.g., magnetic storage, recording systems, miniature motors and many aerospace components. This book will be useful to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers who want to understand sliding friction. The book (or parts of it) could also form the basis for a modern undergraduate or graduate course on tribology.

Combined Discrete and Continual Approaches in Biological Modelling
Author: Alexander E. Filippov
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030415287
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 327
Book Description
Basic laws of nature are rather simple, but observed biological structures and their dynamic behaviors are unbelievably complicated. This book is devoted to a study of this “strange” relationship by applying mathematical modeling to various structures and phenomena in biology, such as surface patterns, bioadhesion, locomotion, predator-prey behavior, seed dispersal, etc. and revealing a kind of self-organization in these phenomena. In spite of diversity of biological systems considered, two main questions are (1) what does self-organization in biology mean mathematically and (2) how one can apply this knowledge to generate new knowledge about behavior of particular biological system? We believe that this kind of “biomimetics” in computer will lead to better understanding of biological phenomena and possibly towards development of technical implications based on our modeling.
