Book Description
With increasing world economic interdependence and a new position as a creditor nation, the American business community became more actively and vocally concerned with foreign policy after World War I than ever before. This book details the response of American businessmen to such foreign policy issues as the tariff, disarmament, allied debts, loans, and the Manchurian crisis. Far from presenting a monolithic front, the business community fragmented into nationalist and internationalist camps, according to this study. Division over each issue varied with the size, type, and geographic region of the various business interests, and despite their formidable economic power, business internationalists are shown to have played a more limited role on certain issues than has been formerly assumed. Unfortunately for the future development of United States diplomacy and world stability, no institutional means for tempering business influence on the formulation of foreign policy, or for coordinating economic and political foreign policies, were developed in the twenties.

Book Description
Both Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt were giants in public life. From strikingly different backgrounds, and sharply contrasting styles and approaches, each man left his unique mark upon the presidency. This collection of historical materials chronicles the connections between the lives of Hoover and Roosevelt from their early collaboration during the Wilson administration to their heated competition during the 1932 presidential election and beyond. Letters, reports, and telegrams between the two men and their wives tell a story of both communication and miscommunication between 1917 and 1945. In 12 chapters, plus an introduction and a conclusion, the editors present documents which reveal the sometimes tense relations between Hoover and Roosevelt. Chapter one includes materials from their work on housing and homebuilding issues during the Harding and Coolidge administrations. The next two chapters focus upon Hoover's presidency and Roosevelt's rise as govenor of New York. Chapter four recounts the strong rivalry during the 1932 campaign, and that rivalry is even more apparent in chapter five. The remaining six chapters include material from Roosevelt's tenure as president. These documents reveal Hoover's attitudes toward Roosevelt's New Deal domestic policies, the threatening international situation of the 1930s, and U.S. involvement in the Second World War.

Book Description
With the publication of his Personal Memoirs in 1885, Ulysses S. Grant established what is today known as the presidential memoir. Every U.S. president since Benjamin Harrison has written one and many have turned to other forms of writing, as well. This book covers the history of works--including autobiographies, diaries, political manifestos, speeches, fiction and poetry--authored by U.S. presidents and published prior to, during or after their terms. The writing was easy for some, harder for others, with varying success, from literary comebacks and bestsellers to false starts and failures.

Book Description
This dictionary provides information on the writers, editors, and publications that have carried on a strong American tradition of peace advocacy that goes back to colonial times. The only work of its kind, the dictionary contains entries for some 400 individuals and more than 200 periodicals that represent viewpoints ranging from radical nonresistance, religious pacifism, and racial nonviolence, to selective anti-war positions and advocacy of world government. Professor Roberts' introduction presents an interpretive overview of peace advocacy and the various print media that became vehicles for it, including mainstream magazines and church or peace movement publications such as tracts, books, and pamphlets. Each entry summarizes the individual's literary contributions and lists known affiliations with periodicals, peace organizations, and religious groups. The bibliographic section documents a representative selection of periodicals that have sought to promote peace at various times in America's history. The volume also includes information on peace organizations and the writers and editors affiliated with them. The product of meticulous research, this reference dictionary brings together a rich collection of material on the writers, social reformers, and publications that have shaped American pacifist tradition. Of interest for the fields of American social history, journalism and communication history, and religion, as well as peace studies.
