I come before you under circumstances rarely associated with the life of any man circumstances fraught with personal considerations that gladden the heart, and quicken the understanding. Forty-one years ago, in September next, when but a lad of seventeen years of age, I here graduated; and, favored with the honors of this then infant institution, I took my departure, with my parents, for the far West, to seek a home beyond the Father of Waters.
