La santé est un système complexe impliquant des connaissances scientifiques, des connaissances techniques pour divers objets indispensables dont les médicaments, des réseaux territorialisés de soins et de distribution des produits, et l'observance des malades. Ici, seule est traitée la question de la disponibilité des médicaments, mais elle est envisagée sous deux aspects, la disponibilité immédiate des produits à un prix possible et la constitution d'industries pharmaceutiques permettant d'améliorer la concurrence. Or, ce deuxième projet se heurtait à la généralisation de la brevetabilité des produits pharmaceutiques dans un monde hétérogène : les médicaments innovants brevetés par les firmes multinationales des pays industrialisés sont trop chers pour les utilisateurs ou pour les systèmes d'assurance de santé des pays pauvres. Des stratégies classiques de charité internationale étaient alors mises en œuvre pour tenter de remédier à cette problématique. D'autre part, le droit international économique contemporain envisage une nouvelle stratégie: le développement d'un système pharmaceutique multipolaire. Today we have access to an almost inconceivably vast amount of information, from sources that are increasingly portable, accessible, and interactive. The Internet and the explosion of digital media content have made more information available from more sources to more people than at any other time in human history.
