Excerpt from Absolute Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism The following statement was prefixed to the first edition of the present work, published in 1884: - "This little book was originally intended to be mainly a reprint of some papers on the Measurement of Electric Currents and Potentials in Absolute Measure contributed to Nature during the winter of 1882-3; but as these were being reprinted, many alterations and additions suggested themselves, which it was thought would render the book more generally useful. Most of the additional matter is mentioned in the introductory chapter, but I may here refer to a sketch of the theory of alternating machines, and of methods of measurement available in such cases, contained in Chapter X., and to Chapter XII. on the Dimensions of Units, which I have thought it desirable to introduce. Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Absolute Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 of 2 The present work is an extension of my small book which, published in 1884, has long been out of print. When the question of the issue of a second edition arose about three years ago, it was thought desirable to extend the plan of the former book so as to make the new a fairly complete treatise on the absolute measurement of electric and magnetic quantities. It has not been my aim to processes or a collection of practical rules, but one in which should be welded together, in some degree at least, the practice of absolute measurements and the mathematical theory of electric and magnetic phenomena. Thus it was no part of my plan to deal with the more recondite and abstract parts of electrical theory; but I trust the work now published may prove of some help to students who may wish to proceed to those subjects. I have, notably in Chapter I. of the present volume, included here and there for the sake of illustration particular theoretical cases which have no direct bearing on experimental processes. Excerpt from Absolute Measurements in Electricity and Magnetism To the late Mr. E. B. Rosa and his colleagues of the physical staff of the Bureau of Standards at Washington I am under many Obligations. They tested and used my suggestions as to standards and formulae of inductance, and constructed an accurate electrodynamometer of the special dimensions recommended in my Phil. Mag. Paper of 1892, and in the First Edition of this book. They have carried in their writings the investigation of the accuracy of formulae, and the allowance for errors of different kinds, to a high pitch of perfection. Their numerical comparison of formulae and their exact computation of the constants of apparatus have not been such as to attract popular attention and applause, but it has been none the less of enormous value to scientific progress. This merit it has in common with the whole work of the British Association Committee on Electrical Standards and of all those scientific men who have laboured at the subject of absolute electrical measurement. This task of founding a system of absolute measure ments was forced upon science by applications to submarine telegraphy, and it is not too much to say that without such a system not one of the immense and varied range of practical applications could ever have been made. I am indebted to my friend and former pupil, Professor E. Taylor Jones, who has made an elaborate theoretical and experimental study of the induction coil, and is an acknowledged authority on that subject, for the account of the action of such apparatus, which appears in Appendix I. The Table of Contents and the Index have been constructed by my eldest daughter, to whose unfailing patience and ready help as amanuensis I have had continually to turn. I wish finally to acknowledge the care of the readers and compositors of the University Press, which, by comparison of references, and other wise, has saved the text from many inconsistencies, and increased its accuracy.
