Book Description
This report describes PLANAR, a data-reduction program for wind tunnel free-flight tests which utilizes data from a single plane. The program calculates moment, force and, in the case of a spinning model, Magnus coefficients. The program is written for an IBM 7090 computer operating under the IBSYS monitor. The mathematical formulation of the problem and the computer program are presented. The program description includes a FORTRAN listing and instructions for its use. (Author).

Aeroballistic Evaluation and Computer Stability Analysis of the U. S. Navy 20-millimeter General Purpose Projectile
Author: Frank J. Regan
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ballistics
Languages : en
Pages : 122
Book Description
The report presents the results of ballistics range and wind-tunnel measurements of the static force and moment and the pitch-damping, roll-damping and Magnus moments for a General Purpose 20-Millimeter Projectile. Data are presented for a Smooth and Basic configuration. These aerodynamic data are used in a special digital computer program to rapidly assess the stability of the projectiles over various mission profiles. The normal-force and pitching-moment derivatives are evaluated, theoretically, by Wood's method and compared with the measurements.

A Method for Determining the Parameters of Ordinary Differential Equations
Author: Charles Eugene Knadler
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Differential equations
Languages : en
Pages : 58
Book Description
The report presents a method for determining the parameters of ordinary differential equations, where it is not necessary that the equation have a closed-form solution. DIFRED, a computer data-reduction program utilizing the method, is also described. The program is written for an IBM 7090 computer operating under the IBSYS monitor. The mathematical formulation of the method is presented, and the FORTRAN listing of DIFRED and instructions for its use are included. (Author).

Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies
Author: I. D. Jacobson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ballistics
Languages : en
Pages : 72
Book Description
The report reviews both theoretical and experimental investigations of the Magnus effect on arbitrary bodies of revolution. The main emphasis is on spinning projectiles at angle of attack, both with and without fins. Flow visualization measurements are used to assess the accuracy of the existing theories. Laminar, turbulent, and mixed boundary layers are considered. (Author).

An Analytic Investigation of Accuracy Requirements for Onboard Instrumentation and Film Data for Dynamically Scaled Wind Tunnel Drop Models
Author: K. S. Keen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Equations of motion
Languages : en
Pages : 122
Book Description
An analytic study was conducted to evaluate anticipated ranges and required accuracies for onboard linear acceleration and angular rate (or acceleration) measurement equipment to be mounted within dynamically scaled wind tunnel drop models. Generic simulations of the separation motion of a tumbling fuel tank both at full scale and at 1/15th wind tunnel model scale were generated using an analytic trajectory simulation program coupled with a prescribed aerodynamic database. The simulations provide a basis for sizing the required instrumentation for proof of concept demonstrations of telemetry techniques in the wind tunnel. The simulations were also used as test cases to demonstrate extraction of aerodynamic information from drop data positions and orientations as read from film records via an inverse solution of the store equations of motion. The studies also aid identification and evaluation of inaccuracies associated with the basic dynamic scaling laws and standard film based data reduction techniques.
