The South Saskatchewan River is the most reliable supply of good quality water in the southern half of the province. However, Alberta also uses the resources of the river extensively for irrigation. Both Alberta and Saskatchewan had plans to develop more irrigated land and Saskatchewan also had development plans for recreational use, leading to concerns over the adequacy of the resource. The Canada-South Saskatchewan River Basin study was undertaken to provide information to guide water management and to help ensure that the water resources of the basin can meet the needs of existing and future users. This technical appendix to the report summarizes the water quality of the water resources of the Saskatchewan portion of the river basin. It identifies the water quality issues in the basin; evaluates existing water quality data bases; fills information gaps; establishes basin-specific water quality objectives for specific uses; and recommends a monitoring plan for the basin. Background information on the study and the water resources of the study area are also included.

The water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) is intended to provide guidance to decision makers and act as a foundation for future watershed management planning of sub-basins in the SSRB by Watershed Planning and Advisory Councils and stewardship groups. The plan applies to all the named rivers and tributaries in the SSRB; these are: the Red Deer, Bow, Oldman, and South Saskatchewan River Sub-basins. The report includes recommendations on water management strategies, the establishment of an Interbasin Water Coordinating Committee, future watershed management planning priorities, recommended water conservation objectives, and implementation responsibilities. Appendices contain information on the public consultation process, a description of the main planning initiatives believed to have some connection to water use and conservation in the SSRB, a list of issues not considered in the SSRB planning process, and previous instream objectives and water conservation objectives. --Includes text from document.

Basin Advisory Committees (BACs) have been established in the four sub-basins of the South Saskatchewan River Basin, Alberta, to provide advice to Alberta Environment on implementing transfers of water allocations under license. This document contains summaries of advice provided by the BACs, and transcripts or summaries of a joint meeting of the BACs & meetings of the individual BACs. Issues discussed include: the factors for consideration in making a decision on a water allocation transfer; withholding of water to protect the environment or implement a conservation objective; evaluation & tracking of water transfers; water availability assessment; and compliance monitoring.
