Book Description
A VeteranaEUR(tm)s Guide to Right Living: Saving Our Military Lives through The Word is a book about my journey, which started with the United States Navy and integrated into a life filled with drug addiction, posttraumatic stress disorder, and being homeless on the streets of Baltimore City, sleeping in abandoned buildings and panhandling for small change. During this time, my nephew, Private Clifford Williams, who recently joined the United States Army Infantry Division, was killed in front of his home while holding his newborn baby in his arms. During this time, Clifford was only on fifteen-day leave from the Afghanistan war on terrorism. If I had put my trust and faith in the Lord while serving my country, maybe I would not have gone through as much turmoil, self-doubt, and postmilitary syndrome upon exiting the navy. I also may have been able to witness to Clifford about Jesus Christ, which would have made a difference in the ending of his life. Only the Lord knows. This book makes a great gift and must-have reading study guide to accompany anyone who has family members heading into the armed forces, already serving an enlistment in the military, or whoaEUR(tm)s ready to give their heart and mind to the Lord! May all our family members and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ return home from service and may all those who havenaEUR(tm)t accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into their life do so now with a clean and pure heart. Many thanks to God, BaltimoreaEUR(tm)s Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center veteransaEUR(tm) mental health program, and the Wounded Warrior Project.

A Veteran's Guide to Transition
Author: Thomas Braden
Publisher:
ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 58
Book Description
This book is written by a veteran for other veterans, to assist in the transition from Active Duty. It specifically addresses the timeline, requirements and challenges one must overcome in order to gain a position in the federal civil service, or "GS" Government Service. This book will help you to establish your own timeline and drumbeat for navigating the process. This timeline should begin prior to your separation and continue throughout your 180 day active duty waiting period (for positions within DoD) until you're hired and on-boarded. This book is dedicated to walking you through this process, step-by-step and chapter-by-chapter.Along the way, this book provides insights and information which will allow veterans to maximize their potential opportunities for employment. It tells you exactly how and when to request additional benefits (such as leave and pay) that may be available, (some only available for veterans). Upon joining the GS ranks (federal civil service), you will want to set yourself to maximize your returns under the new benefit plans which apply to the civil service; specifically, the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). This book will insure that you have the right information when on-boarding so that you make informed decisions and (hopefully) establish your initial payroll deductions to maximize the 5% TSP matching available to you - something not previously available to you while on active duty!Throughout this book, the reader is provided with links to source documents and current information from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), USAJobs.com, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) or other bodies; giving necessary information should current policy/procedures change, especially during COVID. Finally, this book provides an Action Checklist for the reader to follow and not miss a critical step, or inadvertently leave anything on the table. If you're even thinking of applying for jobs in the federal civil service - this book is a must-read!!

Military Mental Health Care
Author: Cheryl Lawhorne-Scott
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
ISBN: 1442220945
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
Too often American veterans return from combat and spiral into depression, anger and loneliness they can neither share nor tackle on their own. Military Mental Health Care: A Guide for Service Members, Veterans, Families, and Community seeks to aid our troubled, returning forces by dissecting the numerous mental health problems they face upon arriving stateside. Don Philpott and Cheryl Lawhorne-Scott, co-authors with Janelle Hill of the highly successful Wounded Warrior Handbook, detail not only each issue’s symptoms, but also discuss what treatments are available, and the best ways for veterans to access those treatments while readjusting to civilian life. In addition, they connect and explain many alarming trends, such as joblessness, poverty and addiction, appearing in our nation’s veteran population on a broader scale. PTSD and struggles with anxiety affect far more than veterans themselves, as sobering phenomena like homelessness, suicide, domestic violence and divorce too often become realities for those returning from war. Military Mental Health Care is both a resource for struggling veterans and a useful tool for their loved ones, or anyone looking for ways to support the veterans in their lives.

United States Code
Author: United States
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 1146
Book Description
"The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

The Five Ls

Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
"I have known Shawn for a short time as lifetimes go, but I say I feel like I have known him for a lifetime through our shared experiences during Huts for Vets weekends. In his book, The Five Ls, Shawn masterfully weaves life experiences, humor, tragedy and faith into a must-read guide for those of us in the work of preventing suicide. Shawn, I am so glad to be of Service with you." -WANDA WRIGHT Colonel, U.S. Air Force, Director, Arizona Department of Veterans' Service "In The Five Ls: A Practical Guide for Helping Loved Ones Heal After Trauma, author Shawn Banzhaf serves as a trailblazer, lead climber, and guide, as well as Sherpa, charting a course for others while providing much needed sustenance. With humor, pathos, and honesty, Shawn courageously opens his life and heart in a way that provides support and guidance for people in need. He didn't just write this book, he lived it. Shawn draws on his unique combination of skills, education, work experience, military service, and personal characteristics...The 5 Ls is written for both those who care about someone living with trauma and those dealing with the effects of trauma directly. It is a thoughtful, insightful, and intimate book, at once simple and complex, clear and deep, written with the powerful hope of literally and figuratively saving lives and relationships." -DENISE ANN BODMAN Principal Lecturer and Barrett Honors Faculty, T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, ASU "Banzhaf's Five Ls approach emerges from a place of curiosity, empathy, and compassion. This book is for those who need straightforward solutions for bearing one another's trauma with open-minded love. Whether the framework is directed toward personal or corporate action, I trust the values embodied within Banzhaf's message can be used to guide others toward freedom and wholeheartedness." -RENEE RONIKA BHATTI-KLUG Founder and CEO, Culturally Intelligent Training & Consulting LLC "Once in a while a book is able to weave together theory and practice in such an intricate way that the transitions are barely noticed. The Five L's does just this inviting professionals, lay leaders, family, and those who have experienced trauma into reciprocal spaces of learning and support. Rooted in research but grounded in experience, Shawn offers a book that is highly accessible without being trite or sanitized. His experience in the military is both central to the story and serves as a bridge for other non-military persons. This book offers insight, wisdom, and clear strategies to empower those impacted directly and indirectly by trauma." -AMY F. JACOBER PhD, MSW, MDiv "Shawn Banzhaf, my dear friend and a co-laborer in the trauma informed community movement, created an impactful resource called the "Five Ls." He effectively illustrates how to be a helpful companion for those who are suffering and deeply wounded. Shawn's humble but authentic sharing of his life story makes this book both powerful and persuasive. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the field of trauma informed care." -SANGHOON YOO Founder of The Faithful City and Arizona Trauma Informed Faith Community
