Book Description
Excerpt from The Western Avernus: Or Toil and Travel in Further North America And it was thus I came to Texas, the land of revolution and rude romance, and pistol arbitration, whither my brother had long preceded me - a land of horses, cattle, and sheep, of cotton and corn, a land of refuge for many crimes, and for those tired and weary even as I was. So outward civilisation was gone, and it was with strange feelings of delight that I came into a new country to commence a new career, although I knew that there would inevitably be much labour and perhaps much suffering for me. Book Description
Excerpt from The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days Another vivid recollection of those boyhood days in Georgia was the return of my father from the army. The news Of Lee's surrender had reached us, and all of us watched for his coming. Though he was long delayed, when at last he did come rid ing home on a swallow-marked brown mule, he was a conquering hero to us children. We had never owned a horse, and he assured us that the animal was his own, and by turns set us on the tired mule's back. He explained to mother and us children how, though he was an infantryman, he came into possession of the animal. Now, however, with my mature years and knowledge of brands, I regret to state that the mule had not been condemned and was in the U. S. Brand. A story which Priest, The Rebel, once told me throws some light on the matter; he asserted that all good soldiers would steal. Can you take the city of St. Louis? Was asked of General Price. I don't know as I can take it, replied the general to his consulting supe riors, but if you will give me Louisiana troops, I '11 agree to steal it. Book Description
Excerpt from Early Western Travels, 1748-1846, Vol. 10: A Series of Annotated Reprints of Some of the Best and Rarest Contemporary Volumes of Travel, Descriptive of the Alborigines and Social and Economic Conditions in the Middle and Far West, During the Period of Early American Settlement During the second decade of the nineteenth century, a colony of English emigrants was established in south-eastern Illinois, at a place in Edwards County known afterwards as English Prairie. Interesting in itself as being a typical experiment in transplantation and in assimilation to frontier conditions, this settlement has attracted unusual attention because of the war of pamphlets it evoked, and the political prominence of some of its detractors. Agricultural emigration was, at that period, a subject of much importance in Great Britain, and the English Prairie settlement became the nucleus around which the contention was waged. At the close of the Napoleonic wars, England's rural interests were much depressed. Hopes had been entertained that, with the return of peace, conditions for the farmer would improve, but these expectations proved fallacious, prices continually lowered, rents and wages increased, distress was widespread, and agrarian discontent alarming. Added to this, the political situation was grave. The domination of the Tory party, the reactionary tendency of foreign affairs, and the general national impoverishment led to the growth of a strong Radical party, which demanded manhood suffrage, abolition of the Corn Laws, and abrogation of the time-honored privileges of the upper classes. Mobs and disturbances were frequent, and there was developed a strong sentiment in favor of emigration to the United States, where political freedom, combined with the prospects of cheap lands, offered an enticing prospect to the harassed rural population of England.
