Excerpt from A Treatise on Dentistry, Explaining the Diseases of the Teeth and Gums: With the Most Effectual Means of Prevention and Remedy; To Which Is Added, Dentition; With Rules to Be Observed During That Interesting Period The word Dentift, has been fo infamoufly abu fed by ignorant pretenders, and is in general [0 in differently underflood, that I cannot forbear giving what I conceive to be its original meaning; viz. The profeflion of one who undertakes, and is capa ble not only of cleaning, extracting, replacing by tranfplantation and making artificial teeth; but can alfo from his knowledge in Dentiftry, prelerve thofe that remain in good condition, prevent in a very great degree, thofe that are loofe, or in a de cayed Rate, from being further injured, and can guard againft the feveral Difeafes, to which the Teeth, Gums, and Mouth are liable; a knowledge none but thofe regularly infiruéted, and who have had a long, and extenfive practice, can poflibly at tain; but which is abfolutely necefiary, to com plete the character of a Surgeon Dentift.
