Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine, Vol. 2 of 2: A Treatise on Special Pathology and Therapeutics Where a fatal termination has taken place in the course of the affection, death has arisen from some acute internal in ammation; and no morbid appearance whatever has been discoverable in the kidneys. Treatment. It is difficult to suggest any philosophical mode of meeting the disease. Should evidences of excitement present them selves, they must be reduced by appropriate antiphlogistics. Coun ter-irritation, by means of a seton, has done some good at first; but the system has speedily become accustomed to it. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Therapeutics, Vol. 3 The notion Of suppressing pain occurred to physicians very long ago; and in consulting the history Of the art, we find that it has been attempted at various periods. We find precise indications in this respect in Pliny, Dioscorides, and other authors. Dioscorides and his commentator Mat tioli mention the use Of an extract Of the root Of mandragora, which the patient swallowed or breathed before cauterization or amputation Of a limb. Late researches show that among the Chinese, in the first years of the third century Of our era, a physician named moatho gave a prepara tion of hemp, which plunged the patient into intoxication or insensibility, before cauterization, incision, or amputation was practised.
