How a member of the most dauntless border police force carried law into the mesquit, saved the life of an innocent man after a series of thrilling adventures, followed a fugitive to Wyoming, and then passed through deadly peril to ultimate happiness.William MacLeod Raine(June 22, 1871 July 25, 1954), was a British-born Americannovelistwho wrote fictional adventure stories about theAmerican Old West.William MacLeod Raine was born in London, the son of William and Jessie Raine. After his mother died, his family migrated from England to Arkansas when Raine was ten years old, eventually settling on a cattle ranch near the Texas-Arkansas border. In 1894, after graduating from Oberlin College, Raine left Arkansas and headed for the western U.S. He became the principal of a school in Seattle while contributing columns to a local newspaper. Later he moved to Denver, where he worked as a reporter and editorial writer for local periodicals, including the Republican, the Post, and the Rocky Mountain News.At this time he began to publish short stories, eventually becoming a full-time free-lance fiction writer, and finally finding his literary home in the novel. His earliest novels were romantic histories taking place in the English countryside. However, after spending some time with the Arizona Rangers, Raine shifted his literary focus and began to utilize the American West as a setting. The publication of Wyoming in 1908 marks the beginning of his prolific career, during which time he averaged nearly two western novels a year until his death in 1954. In 1920 he was awarded an M.L. degree from the University of Colorado, where he had established that school's first journalism course.

Book Description
In 1874, Napoleon Augustus Jennings moved to Texas to join the Rangers under the command of L. H. McNelly. A year later, Jennings was thrown into the conflict between the native Spanish speaking Americans and the English speaking whites who came to settle the area. In an era of cattle thieving and terror, we follow Jennings through the southern border of Texas and find a vivid portrait of life in the late 19th century in one of the most lawless and hardest places to live in the early United States.

Book Description
The Texas Rangers are one of the most storied law enforcement agencies in the world. Nearly two centuries old, its reputation and mythology was solidified in the post-Civil War era, when it was responsible for the capture of numerous criminals-such as the notorious criminal Sam Bass-and the final defeat of the Apache Indians in Texas territory. This is the classic account of those years, by Ranger JAMES BUCHANAN GILLETT (1856-1937), an essential document of how the Rangers operated by someone who was there. Like the best rip-roaring adventure fiction, Gillett relates tales of: . the Mason County War. the Horrell-Higgins feud. Sam Bass and his train robber gang. the Salt Lake War. "treacherous braves, a faithful dog, and a murder." the last fight between Rangers and Apaches. and much more.

Book Description
Excerpt from Six Years With the Texas Rangers: 1875 to 1881 To write a true and complete history of the Texas Rangers as a state organization would require much time and an able historian. I am not a historian and could not undertake such an exhaustive treatise, which would fill several volumes the size of this, and it is only at the earnest solicitation of my chil dren, frontier friends, and old comrades that I have undertaken to write a short history of the rangers during the years I served with them. This little volume, then, has only the modest aim of pictur ing the life of the Texas Rangers during the years 1875-1881. I cannot, at this late date, recount in detail all the scouts that were made while I was in the service. I have, therefore, confined myself principally to the description of those in which I was a participant. Naturally, I remember those the best. Excerpt from Captain Bill McDonald, Texas Ranger: A Story of Frontier Reform In repose, Captain Bill is mild of manner; his speech is a gentle vernacular, his eyes are like the summer sky. I have never seen him in action, but I am told that then his voice becomes sharp and imperative, that his eyes turn into points of gray which pierce the Offender through. Book Description
Excerpt from Diary of Ephraim Shelby Dodd: Member of Company D Terry's Texas Rangers; December 4, 1862 January 1, 1864 In January, 1914, the State Librarian received a letter from a resident of New York State, informing him that she had in her possession a diary found on the body 'of a Texas Ranger hung as a spy. Negotiations for its acquisition by the State Library were opened at once, and terminated successfully. The only information about the diary this person could give was that it was found by a lieutenant from a N. H. Regiment, who for years was a friend of our family, and some time before his death (which occurred six years ago) he gave it to me.
