The author applauds ASTM Committee G-4 on Compatibility and Sensitivity of Materials in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres, its members individually, and their supporting organizations for the significant contributions that G-4 has already made to oxygen safety throughout the world. This contribution includes five new ASTM standards on testing materials, evaluating materials, and designing systems for oxygen service. It also includes two ASTM Special Technical Publications resulting from symposia in 1982 and 1985. The contribution to oxygen safety also includes the international forum of G-4 Committee deliberations, which result in the sharing of knowledge and judgment and stimulate the development of new information and deeper understanding. The G-4 Committee is urged to review its mission statement and rewrite it if necessary. During the review, special attention should be given to the role of G-4 in the education and training of those who have responsibility for designing and using oxygen-generation and oxygen-using equipment, to the importance of considering offgassing, reaction products, and decomposition tendencies in oxygen handling systems, and to oxidants other than oxygen. The mission as presently stated is excellent; the above and other matters considered during the mission review should result in clarifying goals and not in changes in the major thrust of providing information and guidance on the compatibility and sensitivity of materials in oxygen-enriched atmospheres.

The author draws on his 30 years in oxygen safety and participation in the organizing task group of ASTM Committee G-4 on Compatibility and Sensitivity of Materials in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres and G-4 activities to review key industry and G-4 past actions relating to the selection of materials for oxygen and oxygen-enriched service. The Compressed Gas Manufacturers Association formed an Oxygen Regulator Research Committee in 1921. Sixty years later, the ASTM Guide for Evaluating Materials for Oxygen Service (G 63), the industry's first such guide, was published. Committee G-4 formation, membership, scope, and accomplishments to date, including test procedures, are reviewed. Tests currently used by several organizations are included. Future plans of Committee G-4 and its subcommittees are outlined. The standardization of test methods and guidelines for selecting materials will improve oxygen safety and benefit large and small organizations. Furthermore, it is anticipated that these ASTM standards will gradually be included by reference in future government regulations and association standards relating to oxygen safety.
