Book Description
The most widely published feature of Kudumbasree is the setting up of micro enterprises using local resources as well as skills. Micro enterprise development is viewed as an opportunity for providing gainful employment to the people below poverty line and thereby improving their income and living standards. Micro finance in India started in the early 1980s with small efforts or forming informal SHG to provide access to much needed saving and credit services to the marginal population more importantly in rural areas. National bodies like the Small Industrial development Bank of India (SIBI) and NABARD are devoting significant time and financial resource to micro finance sector. The main objectives of this study 1) to identify important applications of micro finance among members in Kudumbasree, 2) to find out whether micro finance influences economic development of women, 3) to get insight about micro finance activities. A well-structured questionnaire was prepared to collect primary data. The questionnaire for this study was developed partly on the basis of existing literature and partly from the opinion of experts in the field by keeping in mind the scope and objectives of the study. Through this study an attempt has been made to analyse the working system of NHG of Purappuzha panchayath. Kudumbasree unit has created an innovative method of mobilising rural savings that eventually helped for providing credit. The members admitted that their socio-economic status improved after joining this unit. NHG unit has brought the national and international recognition as an ideal and workable model of participatory development for eradicating poverty.

Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780742516076
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
In this definitive history, a key figure in the People's Campaign in Kerala provides a unique insider's account of one of the world's most extensive and successful experiments in decentralization. Launched in 1996, the campaign mobilized over 3 million of Kerala's 30 million people and resulted in bottom-up development planning in all 1,052 of its villages and urban neighborhoods. The authors tell a powerful story of mass mobilization and innovation as bureaucratic opposition was overcome, corruption and cynicism were rooted out, and parliamentary democracy prevailed. Considering both the theoretical and applied significance of the campaign in the context both of India's development since independence and of recent international debates about decentralization, civil society, and empowerment, the book provides invaluable lessons for sustainable development worldwide.

Book Description
Microfinancing expanded rapidly in India over the past two decades. India has witnessed innovations in financial options for Micro Finance Institutions (MFI), the addition of new products and services, such as insurance and pension schemes, and the entry of Internet kiosks to rural villages. It has been a recognised fact that microcredit is the most effective instrument of dealing with two crucial social issues, ie, poverty alleviation and women empowerment. The experience of microfinance concept is underlined the fact that it is an apt tool to empower the rural women economically, psychologically and socially. It is hoped to enhance the scope of empowerment of women, which has already found its way in the academic discourse on social welfare schemes and effective rural credit delivery mechanism. This will definitely pave the way for distinctively evolving a solution for Indian way of financing and women capability improvement in terms of the vision of Indian born Nobel laureate for Economics, Dr. Amartya Sen. This will also help us in evolving a societal friendly way of financing in developing the economy by improving the quality of life, living standards, to alleviate poverty, inequality, other developmental and gender issues. It will stimulate the women's imagination about a better world with less injustice and inequalities. Every social experiment or endeavor has inherent in it the potential for both success and failure. But if the experiment is in the right direction, the, failure becomes a stepping-stone to success. The pioneer in this experiment with the micro finance and women empowerment can take the first step or one step at a time, and this becomes the foundation of the ultimate success.

Kerala: the Development Experience
Author: Govinda Parayil
Publisher: Zed Books
ISBN: 9781856497275
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
At a time when disillusion with neo-liberal development nostrums is mounting, alternative models of development are being revisited. Kerala's 30 million people may not have experienced rapid growth in GDP per capita, but they have for the past several decades achieved a remarkable social record in terms of adult literacy, infant mortality, life expectancy, stabilising population growth, and narrowing gender and spatial gaps. What are the implications of the disjuncture between human development and economic growth? What are the political, social and cultural factors responsible for Kerala's success? Does its human development record necessarily relate to sustainability in environmental terms? How inclusive has the Kerala model been, particularly for the fishing community and other socially marginalised groups? Can the new people's campaign for decentralised development from below make Kerala's development experience more enduring? What realistic view can be taken of its replicability elsewhere in India or further afield in the South? These are among the most important questions explored in this timely reassessment.
