The study of the alkaromatic chlorocarbons initiated some years ago was continued. New syntheses of highly strained, overcrowded chlorocarbons were performed. In total, fifteen new reactions were found. A new class of substances was discovered: the Inert Free Radicals. Also, stable alpha-chlorocarbanion salts and other chlorinated carbanions were prepared for the first time. A total of seventy-three new highly chlorinated and perchlorinated substances is reported, including twelve carbon free radicals. (Author).

Progress in the alkaromatic chlorocarbons is summarized, including informational exchanges, papers presented and published, and patent history. Recent data obtained from the synthesis and reactivity studies on the new class of inert perchlorocarbon free radicals are described. These include results obtained with perchlorodiphenylmethyl, perchlorotriphenylmethyl, perchloro-4-phenyldiphenylmethyl, perchloro-4-phenyltriphenlmethyl, perchloro-alpha, alpha, alpha, alpha, -tetraphenylbi-p-tolyl-alpha, alpha-ylene diradical, alpha-H, alpha-H, alpha-H-tetradecachloro-4-methyltriphenylmethyl radicals and related compounds. These radicals are chemically inert to oxygen and halogens, due principally to steric hindrance, but give sharp electron spin resonance lines. (Author).
