The central purpose of this research is to analyze one profession, dentistry, in an endeavor to determine a) the strandard career pattern, b) the basic elements of the process whereby dentists are recruited into the profession, c) the ways in chich a practice is built and the means of acquiring a clientele, and D0 the formal and informal network of social control within the profession. The assumption is posited that the dental profession is an occupational institution. This occupational "community" affords a framework for analyzing the essential features of this profession as outlined in the central purpose. Forty active practitioners, comprising a random sample drawn from the population of dentists within the corporate limits of Kansas City, Missouri, were interviewed. The data gathered from these interviews constitute the basic source of information used in the analysis of the dental profession. The significant findings of this study are: The standard dental career of the general practitioner, the majority of dentists, consists of four distinct stages: the formative, established, declining, and terminal. The type of practice is one important feature of the dental profession which effects the career pattern of individual dentists. Four types of practice were constructed from the data: solo, association, partnership, and contract. The greater majority of dentists pursue a solo practice. Personal influence is an important contributing factor in the dentist's decision to enter dentistry. Dentists seemed inclined toward the professions in their youth. In general, the dentists interviewed stressed personal contact with some member or members of the profession, or related professions, a preference for some type of independent work, and a desire to enter one of the service professions rather than one which had no direct contact with the public. More of the older dentists spent time working at other jobs before deciding to enter dentistry. Many of the younger dentists proceeded directly through each phase of training without taking off long periods of full employment. The young dentist is obliged to commence early. His commitment is greater, the length of training is longer, and the financial cost is higher for the young dentist today than for the earlier graduated dentist. A dentist in most cases must develop and nurture a system of mutual obligations among colleagues, doctors, and other professional and business people. This is an elaborate network of informal ties based on personal contact. Through these connections, the dentist acquires a communication system to the general public and a referral system among colleagues. Early in practice, a greater stress is placed on membership in private social organizations rather than civic organizations. Social groups serve the purpose of a few, require limited obligation and responsibility, and can be attended more at will while civic groups perform a service to the community in a visible and public manner, require greater obligations and responsibilities, and, therefore, can not be infrequently attended. The dentist gains the greatest benefit from private social organizations even though they in turn serve the purpose of a few. Civic organization membership, in the early stages of a dentist's cereer, cannot provide as great a personal service to the dentist in terms of preferential selection of clients by socio-economic status. One of the more observable sources of social control derives from the position and function of the local dental society. This society has control over membership into the state and national associations. Dentists are reluctant to submit to authority at least on the formal level. The degree of identification with the profession, in most instances, determines the dentist's acceptance of formal authority vested in the professional association. The informal network of professional, business, and personal ties exerts a greater control over the dentist's behavior than that of the formal association. The dentist's bread and butter interests are closely attached to tthese groups and they therefore constitute his primary group relationships. The strength of social control within the profession is related to the types of dentists found in this study. The majority of dentists are independents. Other types include the inner core, isolate, misfit, and innovator. Individual identification with the profession is marked among the independent and inner core dentists and as a rule it is weak among the isolates, misfits, and innovators.
