Stage of Maturity, Plant Population, and Row Width as Factors Affecting Yield and Forage Sorghum

Book Description
A study was conducted at Manhattan, Kansas, in 1961, 1962, and 1963 to determine the trends in carbohydrates, fiber, protein, and dry matter accumulation in atlas forage sorghum as affected by stage of maturity and differences in planting systems. In 1961 and 1962, 40-inch and 20-inch row widths were evaluated at populations of 104,500 plants per acre (high); 26,100 plants per acre (medium); and 13,100 plants per acre (low). In 1963, the study was revised to determine effect of stage of maturity and two management systems (thickly drilled in 10-inch rows with 523,000 plants per acre versus 40-inch rows with 39,000 plants per acre) on yield and chemical composition. Dry matter percentage, and yield increased consistently during the period from anthesis until frost. (...).
