Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Electric Railway Economics: And Preliminary Engineering Some time prior to the delivery of these lectures a series of hearings was held by the Railroad Commissioners of New York State to consider the application of the New York and Port Chester Railroad Company for a charter, and during this hearing the practicability from both an engineering and com mercial standpoint of interurban high-speed electric railways was fully demonstrated. Although the New York and Port Chester Railroad is not yet in operation, I used considerable of the engineering and other data placed in evidence at this hearing, as well as much other data worked up in developing and demonstrating the commercial and engineering details of of the New York and Port Chester Railroad in the Lehigh University lectures, and have also employed some of the same data in this book. Neither the lectures, or this book, were or are given as a treatise or exhaustive treatment of the subject as a whole, or of the details as indicated in the chapter headings. The lectures were intended to point the way, and embody some of the results of twelve years of practice and application. This book is presented with the same object in View. Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Side of the Electric Railway: A Paper What steam has been to long-distance travel in replacing the sta e coach and the sail, electricity is in turn to urban travel in rep acing the horse car and the cable road. Later in this pa r I' will indicate the manner in which electricity may sooner or ater realize the best and brightest promises made on behalf of the trans-continental steam railroad, but our first thought is as to electrical travel within towns and cities, and the manner in which it affects social relations, by modifying as with the harlequin wand of transformation all the conditions to which we have heretofore been subjected. Book Description
Excerpt from Economics of Interurban Railways Notwithstanding the fact that there are over twenty thousand miles of electric suburban and electric interurban railway now in opera tion in the United States, of which the operat ing records are available through the medium of the various State Commission reports, and otherwise, there is little data of actual and proven information so compiled as to be useful to the great number of persons, residing in almost every community, who are promoting, or are encouraging the promotion of, an electric interurban railway.
