Terzaghi Lectures
Author: Karl Terzaghi
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475799
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 444
Book Description
Sponsored by the Executive Committee of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains eight lectures given between 1974 and 1983 in honor of Karl Terzaghi and repressenting diverse aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. Topics include: the relationship of geology and geotechnical engineering and how a study of the geology of engineering sites is an important starting point for all geotechnical site studies; effects of dynamic soil properties on soil-structure interaction; bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations; design and construction of drilled shafts; evaluating calculated risk in geotechnical engineering; proposal forØthe establishment of a national center for investigating civil engineering failures, with several case studies; pre-Columbian earth construction in the Americas and technological developments between 2,500 and 500 years ago; and recent progress in the design and construction of concrete-face rockfill dams. The 1978 lecture by the late N.M. Newmark is not included.

Records of Load Tests on Friction Piles
Author: National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board. Committee on Bridges
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Piling (Civil engineering)
Languages : en
Pages : 436
Book Description
Results are presented of 412 load tests compiled in a condensed form. the records are classified and indexed in accordance with type of pile, general type of soil, and locality. By means of these indices, records can be located that may be of interest in judging the probable behavior of piling under somewhat similar conditions. Load-settlement curves corresponding to the individual tests are shown in pile test data sheets. Results of various load tests have been compared on the basis of the shear strength actually developed between the pile and the soil during the tests. The shear strength has been calculated by dividing the failure load in each test by the embedded area of the pile. In the case of h-piles the embedded areas have been calculated on the assumption that failure occurs on the sides of the rectangular prism enclosing the pile section. Results of these calculations are presented.

Pile Foundations in Engineering Practice
Author: Shamsher Prakash
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780471616535
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 768
Book Description
This is a concise, systematic and complete treatment of the design and construction of pile foundations. Discusses pile behavior under various loadings and types of piles and their installation, including consideration of soil parameters. It provides step-by-step design procedures for piles subject to vertical loading and pullout, lateral, inclined and eccentric loads, or dynamic loads, and for piles in permafrost. Also describes load test procedures and their interpretation and buckling of long, slender piles with and without supported length. The closing chapter presents case histories of prediction and performance of piles and pile groups. Includes numerous solved problems.

Foundation Engineering Handbook
Author: Hsai-Yang Fang
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475752717
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 935
Book Description
More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.
