In writing it I have followed more or less closely the notes prepared, a few years ago, for a course of lectures on Prose Fiction at Princeton University. These lectures were repeated with several classes, and many teachers who have had occasion to examine the syllabus of the lectures, and the topical work as signed in connection with them, have asked me to print a hook that would be adapted to effective use in the classroom. I have confidence in the general method of fiction study which is here outlined, although the kindly co operation of my former pupils may have then given the study a certain ardor which the book will fail to impart. Each type has been traced from its earliest appearance to the pres ent time, and those that have come to be regarded as the best exam ples of each form have been especially noted, and, Wherever pos sible, studied. Some of these, however, have been omitted here be cause they are usually emphasized in earlier years of the high School course, and others, because they are not suitable for high school study. The chronological tables given in the back of the book will be of value in keeping before the pupil the time sequence so that the types will not become detached in his mind from their literary periods. It has been deemed wise to include everything essential to the course in this one volume, with the exception of the material for outside readings, and the text of The Tale of Two Cities, full notes of which, however, are given. It is hoped that this wide choice of material, as well as the very full lists for outside readings in connection with each type, will make the book very adaptable and useful for the needs of experienced teachers even though they may, perhaps, wish to make some additions or substitutions for the selections used. Excerpt from Modern Masterpieces of Short Prose Fiction Granted that the "Book of Ruth," and the story of the "Forty Thieves" illustrate the fact that the world has always loved a story and sat at the feet of the story-teller, still we do not find the evolution of the short story of the nineteenth century directly traceable to such stories. When we try to present narrative form of composition to the young student endeavoring to write and brought up on cheap magazines, we do not find that this evolutionary study reaches them. These stories seem to them remote and skeleton tales, not suggesting any immediacy of experience or of imagination. Moreover, they may justly maintain that the plot of Ruth and Naomi, or of Ruth and Boas, is properly a novel plot, demanding the complication of incident which would complete the framework of the story and set it apart from the true short story. The editors of this collection of Short Stories recognize the fitness of developing the short story from its earlier form in a literary historical study of fiction, but as teachers of composition they hold that a presentation of what Professor Matthews defines as the Short Story is more profitable to classes of composition. Professor Matthews says: "It is in France and the United States, rather than in Great Britain, that we first find the true short story; and we do not find it until the second quarter of the nineteenth century." Excerpt from History of Prose Fiction, Vol. 2 In all the versions the tales are enclosed in a frame. A mode of composition subsequently adopted in many writings of a similar description. We are told that a powerful king, after being tired one day with the chase. Came, accompanied by his vizier, to a place of retreat and refreshment. Here the prince and his minister enter into a discourse on human life and government, a conversation which seems to have been suggested by a swarm of bees, which were at labour in the trunk of a neighbouring oak. During this discussion, the vizier mentions the story of Bidpai, and the Indian king who ruled according to his counsels. This frame is not believed to be more ancient than the Turkish version; but the story of Bidpai, which the king expresses a curiosity to hear, is supposed to be as old as the earliest Persian translation, and is of the follow ing tenor Dabchelim, the Indian king, after a feast in which his liberality had been much commended by all his guests, made a great distribution of gold among his friends and the poor. In the course of the following night, an old man appeared to him in a dream, and, as a reward generosity, informed him where he would find a treasure.
