ABSTRACT: The purpose of the current study was to examine the difference in strength and conditioning coaching style effects on motivation of Division II and Division III football athletes. Participants {N = 61) were National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division II (n = 30) or Division III (n = 31) football athletes with an average of 2.77 years (SD = 1.04) with the strength and conditioning coach. Participants completed questionnaires assessing coaching style (Leadership Scale for Sport) and motivation (Sport Motivation Scale-6). All questionnaires used were completed prior to or following a workout with the strength and conditioning coach. A significant difference (p .05) was found between Division II and Division III coaching styles in training and instruction and social support. A significant difference (p .05) was also found between Division II and Division III athlete motivation in external regulation, introjected regulation, integrated regulation, and intrinsic motivation. No significant differences (p .05) were found between Division II and Division III coaching styles in democratic behavior, autocratic behavior, and positive feedback. No significant differences (p .05) were found between Division II and Division III football athlete motivation in amotivation and identified regulation. The current findings demonstrate the difference that exists between Division II and Division III strength and conditioning coaching style as well as athlete motivation.

Too few studies relating to motivation and wellness have targeted the NCAA Division II student-athlete (SA) population. PURPOSES: To examine differences in SAs' sport motivation (SM) types over three time points as well as multi-dimensional wellness (MDW) levels in SAs during one time point. METHODS: Overall, 530 Division II SAs (nmales = 355, nfemales = 175) with an overall age range of 18 to 23 (M = 19.40, SD = 1.33) from 21 teams voluntarily completed the 18-item Self-Determination Theory-based SM Scale II used to measure six motivation types, the 45-item MDW Inventory used to measure nine wellness dimensions, and a demographics questionnaire. Repeated measures Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) and 2x2x3 Mixed ANOVAs were used to analyze SM types while a multivariate ANOVA was used to analyze MDW with an alpha level of 0.05 set for statistical significance. RESULTS: Analyses demonstrated statistically significant differences in SM types over time (p = .05), interactions and differences in SM types between interactive/coactive and male/female SAs (p = .05), and interactions and differences in MDW levels between male/female SAs and SAs who completed/did not complete a college wellness course (p = .05). CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggested that autonomous-based SM types decreased over time whereas amotivation increased over time indicating possible athlete burnout. Interactive and female SAs showed similarities also representative of athlete burnout. SAs who completed the MDW course demonstrated higher physical wellness exercise scores than SAs who did not. Female SAs had higher means in five wellness dimensions when compared to male SAs. SAs who completed the course showed higher means for seven wellness dimensions versus SAs who did not. Further research should ensue to better understand motivation and wellness on a national scale examining Division I, II and III and NAIA athletes in order to provide more generalizable results.

This study looked into the concept that an athlete's psychological attributes play a part in optimal sports performance. Specifically, it investigated scholar athletes' mental toughness and sport motivation, as well as to determine the significant difference of such variables between genders and type of sport as bases for the design of a proposed Psychological Skills Training (PST) program. The Psychological Performance Inventory (PPI) was used to determine scholar athletes' mental toughness and the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS28) to uncover their motivations in sport participation. Collected data were computed and analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages and weighted mean) and t-test for independent samples. A total of 213 scholar athletes from selected State Universities in Region 02 took part in this research, majority was male athletes and team sports athletes were also dominative. Scholar athletes' mental toughness revealed an average score or a "room for improvement" on self-confidence, visualization and imagery control, motivation level, positive energy and attitude control while a below average score on negative energy and attention control which infers a "need for special attention". Findings further indicated a high motivational profile since scholar athletes' sport motivation "corresponds a lot" to both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations while "corresponds moderately" to amotivation. There is a significant difference between scholar athletes' mental toughness when they are grouped according to their gender, but found to have no-significant difference when they were grouped according to their type of sport. Sport motivation of scholar athletes was also reported to have no-significant difference when grouped according to their gender and type of sport. In conclusion, the need to identify scholar athletes' mental toughness and sport motivation as bases for the design of a proposed Psychological Skills Training (PST) program tailored-fit to their psychological needs is important to prepare them for their best sports performance despite adversity.
