A standard method developed for quantifying Coriolis (motion) sickness susceptibility was evaluated in 250 normal and three labyrinthine-defective subjects. The procedure required the subject to execute standard head movements (plus or minus 90 degrees in the frontal and sagittal planes) while seated in a chair device that was rotated at one of several constant velocities. The proper test velocity was predicted in the majority of cases with the Motion Experience Questionnaire. Three of the normal and all of the labyrinthine-defective subjects were found to be unsusceptible to these test conditions. Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index, CSSI, was determined for each subject by multiplying the appropriate E factor, the average stress effect of each head movement for the rpm used in the test, by the number of head movements required to provoke severe malaise (M III). The resultant CSSI values for the 250 subjects ranged from 0.4 to 100, but the distribution was markedly rigt skewed. The procedure yielded a high test-retest reliability (p = .89) in terms of CSSI scores and pattern of symptomatology. In reaching the Malaise III level, the nausea syndrome was manifested in most cases, but a significant percentage (9.6%) of the subjects remained free of any epigastric disturbance or nausea. This book offers a survey of the state of the art in the field of motion sickness. It begins by describing the historical background and the current definition of motion sickness, then discusses the prevalence among individuals, along with the physiological and psychological concomitants of the disorder. It reviews the incidence of motion sickness in numerous provocative motion environments and discusses various personal factors that appear to influence this aspect. Various characteristics of provocative motion stimuli are also described, together with the results of studies conducted in the laboratory, on motion simulators and at sea. Laboratory tests that could potentially be used to assess an individual’s susceptibility to motion sickness and his or her ability to adapt to motion environments are presented in detail, together with the ways in which individuals might be trained to prevent motion sickness or more effectively cope with motion environments. To measure the stressor stimulus effect of rotational velocity in terms of the number of the standardized head tilt movements required to evoke a common severity level of symptoms characterizing motion sickness, sixteen young healthy subjects were rotated in a laboratory (Stille) rotational chair at various velocities within a range suitable for each subject and the limits of 1.0 to 30.0 rpm. Standardized 90 degree head movements were executed at each test velocity until the preselected and quantitatively determined motion sickness endpoint of moderate (M IIA) or severe (M III) malaise was reached. When individual ability to make head movements without evoking symptoms was exceeded, the derived average stressor effect (E factor) of each head movement varied directly and, in log-log terms, linearly with rotational velocity. These data provide the basis for grading individual susceptibility to Coriolis (motion) sickness with a single numerical score as well as define the high rate of change of Coriolis stressor effect as a function of rotational velocity, which may find practical application for specifying rotational rates of space stations.
