A Souvenir of Lafayette : A Historical Sketch of the Cemetery of Picpus was published by Herbert Clarke in 1906 at his printing works located in the rue Saint-Honor� in Paris. This is a rare and intriguing book from the past that deserves to be read by a contemporary audience.Although no author credit is given, it is known that the writer was an American woman named Ella J. Buckingham who for a time was a guest at the convent of Picpus. The book recounts her daily walks to Picpus Cemetery during the summer and fall of 1905. There, while relaxing on one of the benches, she watches as visitors stroll through the small, walled-in cemetery to pay their respects at the tomb located at the southeast corner, furthest from the entrance gates. Here lay the remains of the Marquis de Lafayette. Written at a time when Lafayette was beloved by all Americans, Ms. Buckingham speaks of the annual "Decoration Day" pilgrimages of Americans to this tomb guarded by the bright stars and stripes of the American flag. She recounts the cemetery's long, dark, and fascinating past which reveals why Lafayette is buried in this small, non-descript plot of land in eastern Paris.This facsimile was assembled using the publisher's copy as the target.
