Book Description
The F/A-18E/F is the latest multi-mission tactical aircraft to enter United States Naval Service. it generates power via two F414-GE-400 engines, each of which is composed of six modules. In addition to a new aircraft model and engines, a new concept, the 13 to D Repair Process, is being used for F414- GE-400 module and engine repair. in the 13 to D Repair Process, the intermediate level no longer repairs modules. instead, the depot level performs all module repairs. This thesis develops and exercises a simulation of the 13 to D Repair Process for the F414-GE-400 by incorporating simulated F/A-18E/F flight schedules and engine failures to populate the repair cycle. The simulation provides operational availability (A0) and probability to spare the repair process given an infrastructure and sparing profile. Three previous years of module failures and depot repair times are used to calibrate the model. Simulation results for the baseline studied showed the distinct influence of certain input parameters.

Book Description
This thesis provides a feasibility study and cost analysis to determine what generic engine depot level capabilities should be shifted to selected Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Departments (AIMD) to reduce costs and improve fleet support of F404-GE-400/402 turbofan engines. The downsizing of the military in the next decade, the resulting budget constraints and the reality of base closures will force the Navy to adopt innovative cost saving measures. This thesis used simulation modeling of the F404 engine repair process at AIMDs Cecil Field and Lemoore to evaluate the feasibility of expanding repair capabilities. The simulation model outcomes provided strong indications that such expansion of the AIMDs is both feasible and cost effective. The researchers recommend shifting selected depot repair capabilities to the AIMD. Recommendations include positioning a spin-balance machine and increasing the welding repair capability at selected AIMDs to reduce BCM actions, turn-around times and repair costs for the F404 aircraft engine.

Book Description
This thesis is an analysis of the effect that component life limit reductions of the F404-GE-400 engine have on AIMD Lemoore Power Plants Division operations. Estimations of fleet impact due to F404 component life limit reductions did not include the affect on production work centers. This thesis used simulation modeling of the F404 engine repair process at AIMD Lemoore to investigate the impact of these reductions. The simulation model outcomes provide strong indications that AIMD Power Plants Division operations will not be substantially altered by F404 component life limit reductions. However, there will be a significant impact on engine turn around time and the number of aircraft grounded awaiting engines. Recommendations to reduce the impact of component life limit reductions include improved logistical support in long-lead repair items. Additionally, the researchers recommend greater use of simulation modeling in future planning and analysis of significant logistics support changes. Book Description
The allocation of spare aircraft engines is critical to the U.S. Naval aircraft operation's performance. An aircraft in this system becomes inoperative in the event of an engine failure and remains in that state until it is replaced by a serviceable engine. An engine is removed upon failure and subsequently is recovered by repairing it at the location's repair facilities or elsewhere. However, the availability of a spare engine at the location could reduce the amount of time which an aircraft spent in an inoperative state due to engine repair time. Analytical models have been developed by the DOD to calculate spare engine requirements throughout the system. The models require assumptions be made about certain parts of the system. A Simulation for the Performance of Aircraft Engine Repair System (SPAERS) was developed to simulate different configurations of an aircraft repair system. The analysis section of this report shows a comparison between two situations, namely the analytical rendering of the repair system, and a situation more closely resembling the real system dynamics.

Book Description
We are providing this report for your information and use. The audit was performed in response to the February 18, 1994, DoD Hotline allegations related to the selection of a source of repair for the TF34 jet aircraft engine. TF34 engine repair work was performed at the Naval Aviation Depot, Alameda, California. However, the depot was recommended for closure by the 1993 Commission on Defense Base Closure and Realignment (the Commission) and the TF34 engine repair work was being redistributed.
