Book Description
A tale of four people trapped by their addictions, the basis for the acclaimed Darren Aronofsky film, by the author of Last Exit to Brooklyn. Sara Goldfarb is devastated by the death of her husband. Her son, Harry, is living in the streets with his friend Tyrone and girlfriend Marion, where they spend their days selling drugs and dreaming of escape. When their heroin supply dries up, all three descend into an abyss of dependence and despair, their lives, like Sara’s, doomed by the destructive power of drugs. Requiem for the Sun
Author: Mika Yoshitake
Publisher: Blum & Poe Press
ISBN: 9780966350326
Category : Art, Japanese
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Requiem for the Sun: The Art of Mono-ha is the most comprehensive study in English to date on the postwar Japanese movement Mono-ha (School of Things), and examines the group's practice in Tokyo between 1968-1972 at the height of the nation's political upheaval against the US-Japan Security Treaty, anti-Vietnam War protests and its oil crisis. The Mono-ha artists--who included Noburu Sekine, Lee Ufan, Kishio Suga and Koji Enokura--all distinguished themselves through an aesthetic detachment that, instead of "creating" things, strove instead to "rearrange" them into artworks that interacted with the spaces around them. While sharing certain traits with the Land Art and Minimalism movements that were taking place in the United States, and the Arte Povera movement in Italy, Mono-ha was ultimately a rejection of the Euro-American avant-garde and is now synonymous with the beginnings of contemporary art in Japan.

The Spike Lee Brand
Author: Delphine Letort
Publisher: SUNY Press
ISBN: 1438457634
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
A rare look at Spike Lees creative appropriation of the documentary film genre. In this groundbreaking book, Delphine Letort sheds light on a neglected part of Spike Lees filmmaking by offering a rare look at his creative engagement with the genre of documentary filmmaking. Ranging from history to sports and music, Lee has tackled a diversity of topics in such nonfiction films as 4 Little Girls, A Huey P. Newton Story, Jim Brown: All-American, and When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Letort analyzes the narrative and aesthetic discourses that structure these films and calls attention to Lees technical skills and narrative-framing devices. Drawing on film and media studies, African American studies, and cultural theories, she examines the sociological value of Lees investigations into contemporary culture and also explores the ethics of his commitment to a genre characterized by its claim to truth. The Spike Lee Brand makes a very important contribution to scholarly studies on the film-work of Spike Lee [and] places Lee in the pantheon of important social political documentarians such as Claude Lanzmann and Emile de Antonio. from the Foreword by Mark A. Reid

The Book of Franza and Requiem for Fanny Goldmann
Author: Ingeborg Bachmann
Publisher: Northwestern University Press
ISBN: 0810127547
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
These two fragments of novels, Ingeborg Bachmann's only untranslated works of fiction, were intended to follow the widely acclaimed Malina in a cycle to be entitled Todesarten, or Ways of Dying. Although Bachmann died before completing them, The Book of Franza and Requiem for Fanny Goldmann stand on their own, continuing Bachmann's tradition of using language to confront the disease plaguing human relationships. Through the tales of two women in postwar Austria, Bachmann explores the ways of dying inflicted upon the living from outside and from within, through history, politics, religion, family, gender relations, and the self.Bachmann's allegiance to the twin muses of memory and history, as well as her perception of fascism as not being limited to the context of the war but also existing within the intimate relations of everyday life between husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, psychiatrists and patients' are supremely evident in The Book of Franza. Here, Bachmann follows a woman who escapes from a sanitorium and, after years of silence, sends her brother a cryptic telegram. Rightly suspecting that she has fled her sadistic husband -- a renowned Austrian psychiatrist whose intimate relations have merged with his studies of concentration camps -- her brother finds her in their childhood home. Together they travel to Egypt, where Franza slowly begins to regain her bearings. But Franza's desire to cleanse herself by journeying into the heart of the desert's void ends in tragedy, as she becomes the victim of a horrible act of violence.Unlike Franza, who attempts to flee her past but fails, the heroine of Requiem for Fanny Goldmann makes no attempt to escape her history. Thisnovel tells of the demise of a Viennese actress who is manipulated by a younger, ambitious playwright to advance his career. Deception follows disloyalty; the final treachery comes when the playwright portrays her in a novel, which secures his fame and, in Fanny's eyes, robs her of her future. Caught in a perpetual stasis, Fanny suffers in total obscurity, as her present is stolen from her as well.Whether analyzing the place where the self begins and the power of history ends or the ways in which women are forced to be complicit in their mistreatment at the hands of men, Bachmann's critical approach to the human psyche is unparalleled. Mesmerizing and profound, The Book of Franza and Requiem for Fanny Goldmann constitute the final evidence that Ingeborg Bachmann is the most important female German-language writer of the postwar period.

Maschinen für die Oper. Der Komponist Max Brand
Author: Elisabeth Schimana
Publisher: Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag
ISBN: 3990123289
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
As a contemporary of Arnold Schönberg and Kurt Weill, Max Brand was a figure shaped by late romanticism, futurism, and the early electronic age. The cultural upheaval caused by the Nazis, from whom he fled from Vienna to Rio de Janeiro in 1937, put an end to a very promising career as an opera composer. In 1940 he settled in New York, where he worked to realize his visions of an electronic music machine for the stage. There were many attempts, which all fell short, one of these was an optical synthesizer with waveforms he drew himself, and finally the Moogtonium, a synthesizer based on Oskar Sala's Mixtur-Trautonium and engineered by Robert A. Moog. But development took much too long, and Brand was never able to fulfill his dream of an electronic one-man-orchestra for the opera stage. In 1975 he returned to Austria, where he lived in Langenzersdorf until his death in 1980.
