Book Description
Musicals have and always will be my favourite form of theatre, in the early spring of 2022 I was selected to be the designer of the School of Theatre and Dance’s musical Cabaret , directed by Professor Andrew Cao. I was the production’s scenic designer and this show was my thesis project and design. This production of Cabaret aimed to reimagine the way modern audiences may reflect on the meaning of the show. How can we make this production be as impactful to the students of the University of Florida as it may have been to the originally intended audiences of Cabaret ’s past? How can we create an engaging piece of theatre in an overly saturated digital world? Furthermore, how can we expect students to be reflective when many of them have already become desensitised to negative media in their daily lives? Over the course of half a year the show was analysed, researched, developed and designed by the production team. It was then built, painted and mounted in the fall of 2022. The show then ran for a mere two weeks, yet was still able to leave a lasting impression on its patrons. Creating lasting and engaging discussions of the parallels of our present day society in comparison to the character’s in the musical.

Book Description
Abstract: Cabaret is a musical, set in the year 1931 in Berlin, Germany, that revolves around a young American writer and an English cabaret performer. It focuses on the nightlife of the Kit Kat Klub– a metaphor for the ominous political developments in the Weimar Republic and the society of the club. Attending this night club was a major form of escapism of reality; a diversion from the broader issues presented by society, its political environment, and economic harshness. The inspiration for the scenic design of this production came from various forms of research, such as real historical images of the time period, and artwork from the movement of German Expressionism. From this came an expressionist-realistic set that hid harsh violence behind closed doors, and masked industrial truth with beautiful diversion.
