Although it covers exactly the same ground as my S/zort Hzlr/orz'cal Grammar (itself an abridgment of the historical portions of my jvcrw Englz's/z Grammar), yet the great compression involved in writing it has obliged me to depart considerably from the plan of the larger works; although in some cases, where the limits of conciseness had already been reached in the Sbaft Hzlrlorz'cal Grammar, I have naturally preferred con servatism to useless innovation. Vernon's anglo-saxon Guide was an admirable book for its time, but has long been completely antiquated. I was therefore obliged to make my Anglo Saxon Reader a somewhat unsatisfactory compromise be tween an elementary primer and a manual for advanced students, but I always looked forward to producing a strictly elementary book like the present one, which would enable me to give the larger one a more scientific character, and would at the same time serve as an introduction to it. Meanwhile, however, Professor Earle has brought out his Book for tlze beginner in anglo-saxon. But this work is quite unsuited to serve as an introduction to my Reader, and will be found to differ so totally in plan and execution from the present one as to preclude all idea of rivalry on my part. We work on lines which instead of clashing can only diverge more and more. My main principle has been to make the book the easiest possible introduction to the study of old-english. From the Preface. For some years the want has been felt of a short historical English grammar up to date, especially as regards phonology, dialectology and chronology, the last implying careful discrimination between what is really in living use and what is obsolete. The present work is an attempt to supply this want. It is an abridgment of the historical portions of my New English Grammar. It does not include syntax, for the good reason that a grammar which attempted to deal--even if only superficially--with such a vast and difficult subject as historical English syntax could not possibly be designated as a ' short' grammar. But within the limits of phonology and accidence, including composition and derivation, it will, I hope, be found to contain all that is really essential to the beginner. Some teachers will be disappointed at not finding here any exposition of that time-honoured generalization 'Grimm's Law,' and the still more popular ' Verner's Law.' I have for the present excluded them, because they do not belong to historical English grammar, but to comparative Arian philology; because, if studied adequately, they are too difficult for beginners; and because, without a detailed knowledge of Sanskrit, &c, they are of little use for etymological purposes....
