Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Baptism The object of the author in this Treatise on Baptism has been the edification of Christians. It was not so much his design to maintain and defend controversially even what he has stated and believes to be God's truth on this interesting ordinance, as to lead his readers to the use and great practical benefit connected with a right reception of it. He could not indeed attain this without showing the grounds on which he held the truths thus practically set before the reader, but his object has been, not the full maintenance of particular opinions, but the practical and spiritual profit of the reader, in the believing view of truths which the author considers to be plainly revealed in Gods word, and which have been generally believed by the church of Christ. This treatise completes a series of works commenced in 1815, to promote the practical improvement of The Means Of Grace, for the success of which the author cannot be too grateful to the Father of mercies. He first published his Scripture Help, then his Treatise on Prayer, then that on the Lord's Supper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Christian Baptism The following treatise is an amended and enlarged reprint of papers which appeared in the British Weekly during March and April of the present year. To my argument several critics object, that all sorts of serious errors are modifications of New Testament teaching, and that my proof of Infant Baptism is overturned by my own disproof of Baptismal Regeneration. But I have endeavoured to show that, whereas this last doctrine contradicts utterly the broad principles of the New Covenant, the practice of Infant Baptism is in complete harmony with them and with still broader principles underlying both Old and New Covenants. This complete difference robs their reply of all force. I have also shown that Infant Baptism embodies in the best mode an allimportant truth needing ever to be kept in view, which if not thus embodied would leave the New Covenant in one important point inferior to the Old. These arguments, the critics referred to have overlooked. Their oversight implies that we are bound to reproduce to the letter the forms of Church life described in the New Testament. This silent assumption marks the difference between their standpoint and mine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Laura Clarence: A Treatise on Baptism I would simply say, that many of the books which treat the subject in the most satisfactory way are too expensive to be within the reach of the masses. On the other hand, many of those got up in a cheap style are not sufficiently full to give anything like an intelligent view of the subject. I have endeavoured to present the principal classical argu ments to be found in the larger works in as concise a manner as possible, with some additional arguments which, as far as I know, are not elsewhere to be found. One object which I have kept continually in view is to shew that the responsibility for all the unhappy divisions which have taken place in the Christian Church on this subject rests with the immersionists. Faedo-baptists of every name continually hold out the olive leaf, and are ready to fraternize but they are invariably repelled, their baptism ignored, and all who are unwilling to be immersed are placed beyond the pale of the Church, and by many of them placed beyond the hope of heaven. It may be said thosevi. Introductory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Baptism: Also a Treatise on Confirmation Many years ago, when I was a missionary in Kentucky, where much discussion about baptism took place, especially between Baptists and Methodists, I was invited by. A Bap tist minister named Clack, to occupy his pulpit in Bloom field, with a view to treat of immersion and infant baptism, which a Methodist preacher had a short time previously discussed. I thought proper to decline the offer; but I took occasion to preach on those subjects, on four succes sive Sundays in the Cathedral of Bardstown, and after wards published the substance of those discourses. About nine years ago, I gave to the public a short treatise on baptism, formed in a great measure of the same materials, adding, however, a special inquiry into the use of water as its necessary element, which is denied by the Friends, among whom I then resided in Philadelphia. The edition of this work being exhausted, I have revised and corrected it, making some additions, and omitting some things which do not come into controversy. Book Description
Excerpt from Baptism Dear Sir - For several years after attending college I had the honor of pursuing the languages under your direction. You were present, as you told me, during the discussion between Mr. Campbell and Rice at Lexington, Ky. Elder A. Campbell, as the debate shows, selected you as a most proper authority to whom, on his part, he preferred referring a philological point in dispute. You are presumed, therefore, on both sides of this controversy, to be an impartial and able witness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
