The Irenical Theology of Théophile Brachet de La Milletière (1588-1665)

Book Description
In this study the content and background of La Milletière's irenism are analysed and compared to the irenism of Hugo Grotius, who strove for unity in this same period. The reactions which La Milletière's books and pamphlets provoked are related to the rival groups within each confession: Jansenists versus Jesuits, the scholars of Saumur versus orthodox theologians like Rivet and Du Moulin and the ministers of Charenton. Richelieu's conciliatory religious policy was experienced by the oppressed French Calvinists as a major threat to the integrity of their doctrine. When one of their co-religionists, La Milletière, began to propagate a reunification of Protestants and Roman-Catholics, they did not fail to recognize these irenic proposals as Richelieu's. On the other hand, the Roman Catholics mistrusted this peacemaker as well. This book therefore offers a contribution to the history of irenism, as well as an analysis of the religious situation in France in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Book Description
Who do we say we are? Who do you say we are? Some longtime members are concerned that we are losing our form and shape (identity or DNA) and distinctiveness as Churches of Christ. New members like you want to know who we are and what do we stand for as a church in todays world. What will our children know about our heritage of faith? A churchs identity must be firmly rooted in scripture, particularly the New Testament, and yet be flexible enough to adapt to the local culture and the shifting demands of local mission. The early church learned what it meant to be faithful in Jerusalem, Antioch, and in Rome. Our pioneers of faith on the frontier expansion in America had to rethink denominational authority and what it meant to restore the life of the New Testament church. Today we wrestle with what it means to become a missional church in a pluralistic world? In a postmodern setting, how do we form new communities of faith?

Book Description
Ingenuity introduces a theology and practice of preaching that emerges from the faith and wisdom of black women. Preaching has been resourced and taught from a narrow field of cultural or gendered experiences, historically. Without much support from established channels, black women are left to “figure it out” on their own, and others discern how to preach from a limiting scope. The best preachers understand their own voices and the voices of others. They stretch and grow, and this enables them to preach more effectively. Ingenuity equips readers to negotiate tradition, life experiences, and theological conviction in the creative work that makes way for sacred speech. With Ingenuity, Lisa Thompson offers deep insights for anyone seeking to enlarge their understanding, their language, and their sense of lived experiences, and offers practical help through “In Practice” segments for those who preach. "Written from the deep well of the spirituality of Black women, Thompson has given us a remarkable guide for what preaching should be and must be for the times we are in. Accessible, thoughtful, probing, pastoral, prophetic—all come together in this text. A must read for anyone committed to faithful excellence in proclaiming the word." -Emilie M. Townes, Dean and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University Divinity School
