Excerpt from History of Dickinson College Such is the brief biography of the dis tinguished man who was mainly instru mental in founding Dickinson College, at his residence in Philadelphia on the 1sth of September, i7s3, one week after the charter was secured, when he was chosen first President of its Board of Trustee-s. The scheme of establishing an institution of learning remote from the seaboard in a then comparative wilder ness was not new, though held by many to be chimerical. The custom of sending young men to Europe to be educated was distasteful to the patriotic lovers of a new found liberty, and through the energy and activity mainly of Dickinson, the doubt ful enterprise was undertaken. He proved his faith by his liberality and con tributed freely of his means in carrying out the project. In granting the charter, the Pennsylvania Assembly recognized. This in the following terms.
