A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is formed of low-cost, low-power, multifunctional, tiny sensor nodes that scattered in one area and can collect physical information, process and forward them to sink nodes which act as data collectors. Sensors exhibit self-configuring and self-organizing capabilities and can be deployed densely and randomly without predetermining their positions. Localization has been a major challenge in wireless sensor networks because without finding the position of the sensor that is reporting sensed data, the data reported will not be useful. However, most of the previous localization approaches demand that sensors have plenty of resources like power, memory, or extra hardware used for ranging. In this thesis we propose a new Hybrid Distance Vector based localization algorithm, referred to as HDV-Hop, that accurately localizes sensors while minimizing their power consumption and memory requirements, and without depending on any extra hardware. HDV-Hop splits the task of localization between sensor nodes and the base station (i.e., sink). Moreover, the proposed algorithm does not necessitate the presence of many nodes with preconfigured positions, or anchor nodes. In HDV-Hop, anchors are placed in a circle or a semi-circle around the perimeter of the WSN. Not only this placement strategy leads to more accurate localization, but also it is very convenient for WSNs used for environment monitoring or military surveillance or tracking applications. Using NS-2 and MATLAB simulations, we have shown that the proposed HDV-Hop outperforms other peer approaches in terms of localization accuracy and power efficiency.

Wireless Sensor Networks have been proposed for a multitude of location-dependent applications. For such systems, the cost and limitations of hardware on sensing nodes prevent the use of range-based localization schemes that depend on absolute point-to-point distance estimates. Because coarse accuracy is sufficient for most sensor network applications, solutions in range-free localization are being pursued as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive range-based approaches. In this paper, we present APIT, a novel localization algorithm that is range-free. We show that our APIT scheme performs best when an irregular radio pattern and random node placement are considered, and low communication overhead is desired. We compare our work via extensive simulation, with three state-of-the-art range-free localization schemes to identify the preferable system configurations of each. In addition, we study the effect of location error on routing and tracking performance. We show that routing performance and tracking accuracy are not significantly affected by localization error when the error is less than 0.4 times the communication radio radius.

In sensor network applications, measured data are often meaningful only when the location is accurately known. In this booklet, we study research problems associated with node localization in wireless sensor networks. We describe sensor network localization problems in terms of a detection and estimation framework and we emphasize specifically a cooperative process where sensors with known locations are used to localize nodes at unknown locations. In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. In addition to the broader problem of sensor localization, this booklet studies also specific localization measurements such as time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), and direction of arrival (DOA).
