Book Description
This story of inspiration and determination is based on life of Val Melvin. The story includes his birth, his operations, places he had lived, and his education at the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson, NC. He was born without ears and without a lower mandible (jaw), and he had a difficulty breathing. His doctors inserted a trach. His parents never gave up and learned how to care for him before taking him home. Val's parents realized that their young son was deaf and had to learn sign language to communicate. When Val was six, he was enrolled at ENCSD. The teachers and staff helped me learn and grow. He has fond memories at ENCSD like his teacher Mary Sue Humphrey forcing him eat pimento cheese sandwiches. He remained in ENCSD until he graduated in 1988. Val had many operations when he was young, and it continued until 2002. He moved to Raleigh to finish college and to graduate from Wake Technical Community College in 1995. He later worked at the Department of Revenue in Raleigh for fourteen years. Val is currently a volunteer at the library of ENCSD where he grew up. He is a Christian and attends the Temple of Pentecost. He loves spending time with his family and friends at ENCSD. He loves swimming and spends summers at White Lake, NC.

Jefferson—her longtime best friend—hasn’t stopped trying to win her heart. And Lee is more and more tempted to say yes. But her uncle Hiram hasn’t given up his quest to get Lee and her power under his control. When she’s kidnapped and taken to him, Lee sees firsthand the depths of her uncle’s villainy. Yet Lee’s magic is growing. Gold no longer simply sings to her, it listens. It obeys her call. Is it enough to destroy her uncle once and for all? Rae Carson, acclaimed author of the Girl of Fire and Thorns series, takes us deep into the gold fields as she continues this sweeping saga of magic and history, and an unforgettable heroine who must come into her own. Helping in the war effort from Alaska to the European Theater of WWII, he fought with the 741st Tank battalion. Joe risked his life to break through the Siegfried Line crossing into Germany and earned the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic effort. Book Description
Winner, Christianity Today 2015 Book Award in History/Biography Shortlisted for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography In the decades since his execution by the Nazis in 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor, theologian, and anti-Hitler conspirator, has become one of the most widely read and inspiring Christian thinkers of our time. With unprecedented archival access and definitive scope, Charles Marsh captures the life of this remarkable man who searched for the goodness in his religion against the backdrop of a steadily darkening Europe. From his brilliant student days in Berlin to his transformative sojourn in America, across Harlem to the Jim Crow South, and finally once again to Germany where he was called to a ministry for the downtrodden, we follow Bonhoeffer on his search for true fellowship and observe the development of his teachings on the shared life in Christ. We witness his growing convictions and theological beliefs, culminating in his vocal denunciation of Germany’s treatment of the Jews that would put him on a crash course with Hitler. Bringing to life for the first time this complex human being—his substantial flaws, inner torment, the friendships and the faith that sustained and finally redeemed him—Strange Glory is a momentous achievement.
