Book Description
This book reviews a wide range of methods for laboratory and in-situ measurement of moisture conditions in concrete and related materials in terms of their purpose, principles and practicalities. It suggests that destructive sampling and relative humidity measurements can provide reliable data relevant to a wide range of concrete properties, including durability and permeation and concludes that microwave and neutron scattering methods seem to warrant further development for moisture measurements in concrete.

Book Description
RILEM TC 248-MMB was established in 2012 with the main aim to improve and distribute knowledge related to moisture measurement in construction materials in various scientific and industrial applications. Properties and performance of building materials and structures are influenced to a large extent by the moisture conditions in the materials. Obvious examples are heat conductivity, shrinkage and creep, transport properties, most types of deterioration, discoloration etc. For research and applications the moisture conditions must be quantified, by measurements in the laboratory or under field conditions. There is much variation in methods being used, even within the same topic, in different countries, both with regard to materials and to applications. No consensus whatsoever does exist. For the construction industry it is important to be able to quantify the moisture conditions in an accurate way in various applications. This state-of-the-art report is divided into two parts, Principles and Applications, with altogether 28 chapters on various moisture measuring principles and a number of applications.

Book Description
The work has been concentrated on developing a method of calculating the drying of moisture in hydrating concrete. A great number of theories have been available but could not be used because the necessary material properties regarding moisture were missing. By extensive laboratory investigations the most essential material properties in respect to moisture have been determined.--The sorption isotherms for concrete of different composition and age have been evaluated as well as the progress of hydration of some cements. Flow measurements and several drying experiments have given the effect on the diffusivity of different factors in the composition. Especially the water-cement ratio and the air content have been found most important.--Using these material properties a computerized calculation model has been developed for the drying of concrete. At a comparison to a number of control experiments in a full scale a good correspondence has been found.--Hygrometric methods of moisture measurements are shown to have several advantages. The state of moisture is expressed in a far better way, small samples can be used and the accuracy is much better than when measuring the moisture content. (author abstract).
