Book Description
Point Reyes National Seashore has a long history as a working landscape, with dairy and beef ranching, fishing, and oyster farming; yet, since 1962 it has also been managed as a National Seashore. The Paradox of Preservation chronicles how national ideals about what a park “ought to be” have developed over time and what happens when these ideals are implemented by the National Park Service (NPS) in its efforts to preserve places that are also lived-in landscapes. Using the conflict surrounding the closure of the Drakes Bay Oyster Company, Laura Alice Watt examines how NPS management policies and processes for land use and protection do not always reflect the needs and values of local residents. Instead, the resulting landscapes produced by the NPS represent a series of compromises between use and protection—and between the area’s historic pastoral character and a newer vision of wilderness. A fascinating and deeply researched book, The Paradox of Preservation will appeal to those studying environmental history, conservation, public lands, and cultural landscape management, and to those looking to learn more about the history of this dynamic California coastal region.

Book Description
A young man’s hilarious encounters with life, love, and a flock of celebrities. It is as if Forrest Gump’s smarter brother stumbled through the Ivy League on his way to a career as a college professor. A naked jog around Harvard Yard; an unsuccessful effort to become part of the Kennedy clan; wandering in the West Virginia hills looking for long-lost relatives; delivering mail to dead senators on Capitol Hill; catching priceless artifacts thrown by a duchess during the tour of a grand English estate; misplaced nude photographs from a medical photographer; and even a face-to-face encounter with the Queen at Royal Ascot. These outrageously funny stories form a memoir of self-discovery by someone who can never quite learn the lessons of life.

Book Description
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE presents traditional oral Native American sacred teachings from the Iroquois, Lakota, and other traditions. The author has been receiving these teachings from elders since his youth. The wisdom embraces cosmology, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, sociology, psychology, healing, dream interpretation, and more.Audlin calls himself neither a spiritual teacher nor an authority, but a conduit through which these oral traditions can be presented meaningfully to people in a modern world. He outlines universal principles common to many traditional peoples worldwide. The Red Road is available to all --regardless of religion or ethnicity -- willing to follow its paths. These paths, however, are often not easy and require deep personal and spiritual commitment. Audlin says in his introduction: "If this book serves any purpose, let it be to help us bring the Sacred Hoop of All the Nations back together again, so we and all that lives may stand as one in silent awe before that Great Mystery."

Selected from among approximately 1,700 poems that Ralph Vile, a Christian layman and former schoolteacher of Luray, Virginia, wrote over a period of more than fifty years, this book focuses on the holiday during which Christians throughout the world observe the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Drawing from the Biblical accounts, Ralph reflects on what it means that Jesus came to earth and on what it would mean if He had chosen not to do so. The volume includes, "The Christmas Tree," "Let the Bells Ring Out," "The Christmas Gospel Story," and many others that have touched those who have read them. Written for individuals who want to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, this volume reflects the love, the joy, and the hope of God's greatest gift to mankind and points to the redemption that the crucified and risen Savior provides to all who believe in Him.

Book Description
A fascinating, beautifully illustrated guide to the monsters that are part of our collective psyche, featuring stories from the Lore podcast—now a streaming television series—including “They Made a Tonic,” “Passed Notes,” and “Unboxed,” as well as rare material. They live in shadows—deep in the forest, late in the night, in the dark recesses of our minds. They’re spoken of in stories and superstitions, relics of an unenlightened age, old wives’ tales, passed down through generations. Yet no matter how wary and jaded we have become, as individuals or as a society, a part of us remains vulnerable to them: werewolves and wendigos, poltergeists and vampires, angry elves and vengeful spirits. In this beautifully illustrated volume, the host of the hit podcast Lore serves as a guide on a fascinating journey through the history of these terrifying creatures, exploring not only the legends but what they tell us about ourselves. Aaron Mahnke invites us to the desolate Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where the notorious winged, red-eyed Jersey Devil dwells. He delves into harrowing accounts of cannibalism—some officially documented, others the stuff of speculation . . . perhaps. He visits the dimly lit rooms where séances take place, the European villages where gremlins make mischief, even Key West, Florida, home of a haunted doll named Robert. In a world of “emotional vampires” and “zombie malls,” the monsters of folklore have become both a part of our language and a part of our collective psyche. Whether these beasts and bogeymen are real or just a reflection of our primal fears, we know, on some level, that not every mystery has been explained and that the unknown still holds the power to strike fear deep in our hearts and souls. As Aaron Mahnke reminds us, sometimes the truth is even scarier than the lore. The World of Lore series includes: MONSTROUS CREATURES • WICKED MORTALS • DREADFUL PLACES
