On Empire, Liberty, and Reform
Author: Edmund Burke
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300081473
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 540
Book Description
The great British statesman Edmund Burke had a genius for political argument, and his impassioned speeches and writings shaped English public life in the second half of the eighteenth century. This anthology of Burke's speeches, letters, and pamphlets, selected, introduced, and annotated by David Bromwich, shows Burke to be concerned with not only preserving but also reforming the British empire. Bromwich includes eighteen works of Burke, all but one in its complete form. These writings, among them the "Speech on Conciliation with the American Colonies," A Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol, the "Speech at Guildhall Previous to the Election" of 1780, the "Speech on Fox's India Bill," A Letter to a Noble Lord, and several private letters, demonstrate the depth of Burke's efforts to reform the empire in India, America, and Ireland. On these various fronts he defended the human rights of native peoples, the respect owed to partners in trade, and the civil liberties that the empire was losing at home while extending its power abroad.

Pages : 132
Book Description
Excerpt from A Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol When Edmund Burke died in 1797, George Canning wrote to one of Lord Malmesbury's embassy: There is but one event, but that is an event for the world, Burke is dead. He is the man that will mark this age, marked as it is in itself by events, to all time. 1 During the twenty-nine years from 1765 to 17 94, in which Burke was a member of the House of Commons, he was actively interested in every measure of constitutional and colonial importance. As a political pamphleteer and legislator, he helped to remove the unjust restrictions from Ireland's commerce; to grant the privileges of citizenship to Roman Catholics; to preserve the independence of the represen tatives of the people in Parliament from the unconsti tutional influence of the King; and to protect the King and the Church from the destructive influence of the French Revolutionists. His greatest work was in dis cussing and determining the relation of the immrial government to the colonies, both in the case of the Americans, who claimed their rights as Englishmen, and of the people of India whose sufferings from English injustice were scarcely known in England.
