Unsteady Aerodynamics, Aeroacoustics, and Aeroelasticity of Turbomachines and Propellers
Author: H.M. Atassi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461393418
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 876
Book Description
The first International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics and Aero elasticity of Turbomachines was held in Paris in 1976, and was followed by symposia at Lausanne in 1980, Cambridge in 1984, Aachen in 1987, Bei jing in 1989, and Notre Dame in 1991. The proceedings published following these symposia have become recognized both as basic reference texts in the subject area and as useful guides to progress in the field. It is hoped that this volume, which represents the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics of Turbomachines, will continue that tradition. Interest in the unsteady aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and aeroelasticity of turbomachines has been growing rapidly since the Paris symposium. This expanded interest is reflected by a significant increase in the numbers of contributed papers and symposium participants. The timeliness of the topics has always been an essential objective of these symposia. Another important objective is to promote an international exchange between scien tists and engineers from universities, government agencies, and industry on the fascinating phenomena of unsteady turbomachine flows and how they affect the aeroelastic stability of the blading system and cause the radiation of unwanted noise. This exchange acts as a catalyst for the development of new analytical and numerical models along with carefully designed ex periments to help understand the behavior of such systems and to develop predictive tools for engineering applications.

Rotor-Stator Interaction in Radial Turbomachines

Book Description
The interaction between rotating and stationary parts affects the flow field inside both components, modifying the machine performance in terms of operating stability, structural vibrations, noise and pressure pulsations. The aim of this book is to improve the understanding of the rotor-stator interaction phenomena with an extensive in-depth investigation of their characteristics, origin, development and effects on the machine performance. An unusual acoustical approach, aimed at identifying a possible connection between noise emissions and inner fluid-dynamics, was proposed and combined with a PIV experimental analysis in order to study the unsteady flow phenomena developing inside the pump vaned diffuser. These analysis, coupled with a numerical analysis on the same turbomachine, allowed to analyze in-depth the effects of the rotor-stator interaction on the machine flow field and hence on its performance.

Book Description
This report describes a theoretical design and analysis study of the benefits of vane sweep and lean for reducing rotor- stator interaction tone noise. It is shown that the kinematic relationship between the rotor wakes and stator vanes is the principal factor in determining the achievable noise reductions. Vane sweep and lean control rotor wake skewing as seen by the stator vanes and hence influence the number of wake intersections per vane. An increase in the number of intersections reduces noise levels. Hence, to reduce rotor-stator noise, van sweep and lean must be chosen in such a way as to increase wake intersections per vane. A simple design rule is thus proposed which requires a sweep configuration that puts the vane tip downstream of its root and a vane lean that is in the direction of the rotor rotation. A detailed comparison of the predicted and measured noise reductions for a swept and leaned stator is then carried out. Overall, these comparisons show that the predicted benefits of a swept and leaned stator are in good agreement, qualitative as well as quantitative, with the measured reductions for the fan speeds relevant to noise certification procedure. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate the validity of design criterion and the theoretical tools used in this study. Envia, Edmane and Nallasamy, M.
