Of course, the limits of a work of the kind prevent any extended account of incidents or particulars. Wherever these are desired, resort must necessarily be had to larger works on the subject. The aim of the work is to furnish an outline or general sketch of the State's history, sufficient to give an understanding of its leading features; to set forth the manner of its rise and progress from earliest times to the present date. Striving always to make it accurate and exact, the extent to which I may have been successful therein must now be left to the judgment of a considerate public. In presenting this little book to the public, he does so in the hope that it may contribute something toward this end. This method, compared with the chronological method, has the advantage not only of being more vivid, but of stimulating in boys and girls an ambition to excel and a legitimate state pride.
