We need not analyse his motives, or determine how much was due to policy, how much to a desire to aggrandise his family. N epotism has a deservedly hateful name; but by no other means could a Pope accomplish his object. The Romagna must be won by one who had his heart in the work, and by one whom the Pope could entirely trust. Pius II. Had not done much with Antonio Piccolomini Sixtus IV. Had only raised Girolamo Riario to a small position; the Cibo family had been altogether without resources. Alexander VI. Felt that he and Cesare were made of other stuff, and that the times were in his favour. There was nothing exceptional in his undertaking; he only pursued his end more entirely, more resolutely, and more successfully than his predecessors. The end and the means alike had become a recognised part of the papal policy; only when, in the hands of Alexander VI. And Cesare Borgia they seemed likely to be accomplished, did they awaken universal terror. Italy quailed at the prospect of a powerful state in the centre which was backed by the far-reaching influence of the Papacy, and could thereby command foreign allies at any emergency. Churchmen were terrified at the danger of the Papacy being made dependent on a powerful Duke of the Romagna. The fruitful and sturdy stock of the Borgia swarmed in Rome, and the Papacy might become hereditary in the Borgian family. Few were far - sighted enough to see at first the full meaning of Alexander vi.'s policy; but all were made uneasy, and every step in the development of that policy revealed its hearing more clearly and produced deeper-seated alarm and hatred. Excerpt from A History of the Papacy, Vol. 1: During the Period of the Reformation The result of many experiments and much discussion was the establishment of a General Council as the ultimate court of appeal. Unsuccessful through its crudity at Pisa, the con ciliar system asserted itself at Constance, and was strong enough to answer its immediate purpose, and end the Schism. But when it had done this, it could do nothing more. The abolition of ecclesiastical grievances was beyond its power. Men could not discover the interests of Christendom, because they were overlaid by conflicting interests of classes and nations. The Council, which expressed in the fullest manner the unity of Christendom, showed that that unity was illusory. The con ciliar principle was set up as a permanent factor in the organi sation of the Church, and men hoped that it might be more fortunate in the future. The condition of Europe and the fortunes of the Papacy offered a brilliant opportunity to the Council of Basel. In some things it succeeded; but it was helpless to reorganise the Church. It attacked, instead of reforming, the Papacy: it proposed to hand over the Church to a self-constituted parlia' ment. The Council of Constance failed because it represented Christendom too faithfully, even to its national dissensions. The Council of Basel failed because, in its endeavour to avoid that danger, it represented nothing save the pretensions of a self-elected, self-seeking body of ecclesiastics. Excerpt from A History of the Papacy, Vol. 3: During the Period of the Reformation, 1464-1518 The period of history with which these volumes are concerned has called forth in late years a great amount of literature. The Italian Renaissance has been dealt with in its literary, artistic, social, and religious aspects by specialists of great merit; and its leading personages have been made the subjects of many excellent biographies. Perhaps one result of this special treatment has been to unduly isolate this period and exaggerate some of its characteristics; it has been regarded as entirely abnormal, its large historic features have been blurred by the mass of details, and its place in the development of human affairs has been somewhat obscured. I have striven to treat it with the same sobriety as any other period, and, while endeavouring to estimate the temper of the times, I have not forgotten that that temper affected chroniclers as much as it affected those who were the subjects of their chronicles. If the writers of the Middle Ages are to be reduced to the scientific view of historical progress which we now adopt, the same treatment ought in all fairness to be applied to the literary men of the Renaissance. The credulity displayed in the gossip of the one has to be appraised as carefully as the credulity of the miraculous records of the other. I have attempted to found a sober view of the time on a sober criticism of its authorities. Amongst these authorities there has been opened up in the late years a great number of the records of contemporary diplomacy, especially that of Venice, of which we have a consecutive abstract in the diary of Marin Sanuto.
