Book Description
Excerpt from A History of France From the Death of Louis XI, Vol. 1: Reign of Charles VIII, Regency of Anne of Beaujeu, 1483-1493 The period of French history with which this volume deals has been neglected by historians. Little or nothing has been written about it in English beyond the necessarily brief accounts to be found in such general histories as those of Sir Nathaniel Wraxall Dean G. W. Kitchin (1873 Mr. A. J. Grant and Mr. J. R. Moreton Macdonald Even in France a good many years have passed since the period was last studied in detail, the most recent books devoted to it being Dupuy's Hirtoire de la Reunion de la Bretagne' a la F ranee, published in 1880, and Pélicier's Errai rnr le Gouvernement de la Dame de Beaujeu, published in 1882. The neglect may be attributed to two causes. It is due primarily to the comparative paucity of original materials, and especially to the silence of the one attractive contemporary writer, Philippe de Commynes, who quarrelled with Anne de Beaujeu, and revenged him self by omitting all reference to her career. It is also encouraged by the fact that the years immediately following the death of Louis XI seem to suffer by contrast both with those that came before them and with those that came after - ou the one hand, with the dramatic interest of one of the most striking reigns in French history, and, on the other, with the romantic story of that first Italian expedition which is usually regarded as the beginning of modern European history. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of France, Vol. 4: From the Death of Louis XI Summing up the characteristics of the period with which his work had made him familiar, the editor of the Venetian State Papers was led to remark upon the manner in which, 'at the close of the fifteenth century, and the beginning of the sixteenth, the continual agitations and aggressions with which the great continental powers were endeavouring to extend or consolidate their dominions, brought about the closest intercourse between the different members of the European family. Leagues of spoliation and partition, leagues of guarantee and protection, of attack and defence, succeeded each other with endless variety of combination. The balance of power was recognized as the leading prin ciple of the statesman's policy; and how to enforce it in the case of his neighbour and to elude it in his own became, as it has been ever since, the prime object of his ambition, which called into action all the resources of his genius and all the arts of diplomacy. At the League of Cambray the in trigues and artifices of diplomatic treachery sprang into a rank luxuriance of perfection which has never since been surpassed. Book Description
Excerpt from History of France, Vol. 2: From the Death of Louis XI; Reign of Charles VIII, 1493 1498 A health which demanded incessant care had left small opportunity for any scheme of education to correct innate defects of mind and character. Charles had spent his boyhood at Amboise in a seclusion unbroken by that juvenile experience of public life through which Princes are accustomed to serve their apprenticeship to the throne and he had been kept so close that there were some who doubted if his presence in the castle was suspected by the inhabitants Of the little town which nestled around its towers. Tradition ascribes the régime to the suspicious malevolence Of Louis XI, taught by the disloyalties of his own youth the potentialities for mischief of an heir apparent: but tradition wrongs the King. The attitude of Louis towards his son was that of an over-anxious parent, trembling lest the gift for which he had longed and prayed should be snatched prematurely from his grasp. Solicitous about every detail of the frail child's health, he pestered his attendants with inquiries whether he was in good spirits and eating' and sleeping well, whether he lay warm of nights, or grew over-heated at his play; and a frenzy of anxiety when Charles fell sick was succeeded upon his recovery.
