Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians, Vol. 1 of 2 I have here and there introduced some remarks relating to the Greeks, thinking that a comparison of the habits and arts of other people, with those of the Egyptians, may be interesting; and the impulse now given to taste in England has induced me to add some observations on decorative art, as well as on colour, form, and proportion, so well understood in ancient times. And as many of the ideas now gaining ground in this country, regarding colour, adaptability of materials, the non-imitation of natural objects for ornamental purposes, and certain rules to be observed in decorative works, have long been advocated by me, and pro perly belong to the subject of Egypt, I think the Opportunity well suited for expressing my opinion upon them while I rejoice that public attention has been invited to take a proper view of the mode of improving taste. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Egypt Under the Pharaohs, Vol. 1 of 2: Derived Entirely From the Monuments The necessity for a new English Edition of the History of Egypt under the Pharaohs has pleased the German Author as much as it has filled him with gratitude towards the reading public in England. Far from believing that he could claim for his book the merit of having solved, even approximately, the endless difficulties of a continuous exhibition of the history of the ancient land of the Pharaohs, he regrets to be obliged to confess that his work is only an attempt to piece together the loose and crumbling stones of a building, which the ever-wasting tooth of time and the destroying hand of man have swept off the face of the earth almost to its foundations while a kind fortune has preserved but few remains of it to the present day. Such an attempt must therefore appear alike bold and of doubtful success; and a great responsibility has been laid upon the Author, whose zeal and efforts have been impeded on all sides in the search for the articulate witnesses of historical antiquity. Book Description
"Another solid work of history from an author and historian who truly grasps the mysteries of ancient Egypt." - Kirkus Reviews Drawing on a lifetime of research, John Romer chronicles the history of Ancient Egypt from the building of the Great Pyramid through the rise and fall of the Middle Kingdom: a peak of Pharaonic culture and the period when writing first flourished. Through extensive research over many decades of work, reveals how the grand narratives of 19th and 20th century Egyptologists have misled us by portraying a culture of cruel monarchs and chronic war. Instead, based in part on discoveries of the past two decades, this extraordinary account shows what we can really learn from the remaining architecture, objects, and writing: a history based on physical reality.

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Ancient Egyptians As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this vol ume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based di rectly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this pur pose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in to to), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Trans lations, bar). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are re ferred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original monument, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliog raphy will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a mass of workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it. Book Description
Excerpt from Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1: 1920 1923 There are three pairs of earrings, all of which have long dangles of beads, a style probably coming from the North with the barbaric invasions. Two pairs of bracelets have elaborately pierced Openwork discs. These are ingenious in design, reminding us of the marble-work screens of San Clemente, or the rather later ones of Saint Mark 's. All of this style seems to be the result of the northern introduction of wicker - work screens, which belonged to nomadic life. Another pair of bracelets, or rather armlets, are made of hollow hexagonal tube, notched to imitate banding, and with two imitations of aurei of Honorius at the fastening. A single bracelet is of twisted wire pattern, with a fulsome bezel of thirteen set stones. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
