Book Description
Greek myth is part of our background, the names of many of the gods and goddesses known to us all. Within the myths are numerous references to plants used by goddesses and gods to heal or enchant, and the names of many of these plants have been incorporated into the Latin binomials that are used to identify them. By half a millennium BCE the physician god Asclepius entered into the mythology and temples were built to him called Asclepiaea, where the sick came to worship him and sleep with serpents in dormitories, hoping to experience miracle cures. At around the same time the first actual physicians began to practice within the Asclepiaea, using herbs, surgery and dietary advice. From these remote beginnings Greek medicine and botany evolved and were recorded, first in the Hypocratic Corpus, then by many other famous Greek physicians including Theophrastus, Dioscorides and Galen, who recorded the medicinal plants they used. This book traces the evolution of Greek medicine, the source of Western medicine, and looks at a selection of plants with healing properties, including a large number of trees which were both sacred and medicinal.

Book Description
Once Oneida healer Russell FourEagles (Atuneyute Keya) went to see his friend Bob, whom doctors had declared incurably paralyzed following a stroke. Within minutes of FourEagles’ attention, Bob was kicking the covers off the bed. “You should write a book!” Bob later encouraged. And here it is. FourEagles’ grandparents escaped the reservation-school education that obliterated Native American culture, preserving the healing abilities that can be traced in an unbroken lineage back two hundred grandmothers. In The Making of a Healer, he openly shares his knowledge in an effort to keep the old wisdom and practices from being forgotten. Recounting sacred Oneida myths and cosmology, he describes the healing powers of the Fire Ceremony, energy exchange, and humor; discusses natural remedies; and explains how he healed himself from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in the Vietnam War.

Book Description
These new essays explore the ways in which contemporary dramatists have retold or otherwise made use of myths, fairy tales and legends from a variety of cultures, including Greek, West African, North American, Japanese, and various parts of Europe. The dramatists discussed range from well-established playwrights such as Tony Kushner, Caryl Churchill, and Timberlake Wertenbaker to new theatrical stars such as Sarah Ruhl and Tarell Alvin McCraney. The book contributes to the current discussion of adaptation theory by examining the different ways, and for what purposes, plays revise mythic stories and characters. The essays contribute to studies of literary uses of myth by focusing on how recent dramatists have used myths, fairy tales and legends to address contemporary concerns, especially changing representations of women and the politics of gender relations but also topics such as damage to the environment and political violence.

Book Description
Roman Petriv, a retired voivod, is looking forward to enjoying some peace after a lifetime of warring. His last fight, leading a successful defense of Zavaliv from the Ottoman attack ten years ago made him a first choice for the town's magistrate. They had known ten years of peace and it felt good. When Cossack’s sotnja comes by, it stirs up memories of his past and reminds him that his sense of peace is not shared by the rest of the land. Many of the Cossacks are wounded from the battles which rage closer and closer to home. When warriors leave, a new threat emerges: the kind Roman has no idea how to fight. Ancient forest gods of his predecessors do not feel threatened by the sharp edge of a steel weapon. While the Christian faith is the predominant one in the land, the truth is that it, like a veil, is laid over the much older faith. Ancient Slavic paganism and its deities still exist deep in the abundant forests of these lands. Sometimes they meddle in human affairs. When the old gods answer the town witch, things begin to spiral out of control.
