Book Description
Excerpt from The Church in Scotland The history of the Scottish Church, at least of particular periods, has been often written, and with much detail; it has been more often written indirectly in histories of the nation, for in few countries has the life of the people been so closely interwoven with that of the Church. One fact alone will express the extent of the connection: before the Reformation it was calculated that almost half of the wealth of Scotland was in the hands of ecclesiastics. As far as we know there are only two popular histories of the Church, embracing the whole length of its existence, in use and favour at the present time: one by an Episcopalian, Professor Grub, in four volumes; the other in two, by a Presbyterian, Dr. John Cunningham. When asked to write the history in one volume, I came to the conclusion that it would be more useful, as it has certainly been more interesting, to write at greater length upon the most salient points and eventful epochs than to give the bare outlines of a continuous history. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church of Scotland: A Sketch of Its History The favourable notices by reviewers of the First Edition, and the rapid sale of 5000 copies, have already justi fied the high expectations with which the Committee issued this book. The present reissue will doubtless meet with an equally favourable reception. Mr. Muir's ungrudging work and high ability have well deserved the success which, in name of the Committee, I gladly acknowledge. A. H. C. Excerpt from Annals of the Church in Scotland From my ancestors I inherit a good constitution, very short sight, a strong memory, a tongue quick when started, but slow to start, and a kindly but solitary temper. What I have made, or failed to make, of this inheritance, the following record will show. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
