Excerpt from A Guide to the Reports on Collections of Manuscripts of Private Families, Corporations and Institutions in Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. 1: Topographical A certain perplexity has arisen with regard to the arrangement of the Reports from the circumstances connected with their manner of issue, altered from time to time, as explained above, in SO much that it has been difficult to place them on the shelves in a logical and useful order. For example, if the Reports on the Manuscripts of the Earl of Dartmouth (p. 9) or Of. The Duke Of Portland (p. 10) are put in the order Of report and appendix, as they naturally would be, the different parts Of the Report will be found widely separated on the shelves. They are, moreover, when arranged in this way difficult to lay hands on. A scheme Of arrangement Of volumes therefore is offered and recommended for adoption, which is indicated by the Clarendon numbering on pp. 1 - 14, and if this is accepted and the volumes numbered and arranged accordingly, difficulties Of consultation Should disappear, and the different parts or volumes Of a Report be brought together. A second or third part Of a Report will bear the same number as the first and follow it on the library shelf. Each Various Collections volume will become an additional no. 55. An entirely new self-contained Report will have a new number. A glance at p. 15 will tell the student what is the number on the shelf Of the Report to which he is referred herein. It remains to Offer some explanations, directions, and cautions with regard to the contents and use Of the main section Of this Guide contained on pp. 16-233. In the first place, this part of the Guide is confined to topographical entries. Entries relating to persons and matters will form Part II., with which some progress has already been made.
